engine is back wards

hey i was just wondering if it was possible to fuck up this bad. i rebuilt my motor and when i turn it over the exhaust valves open on the intake and  its all reverse its totally back wards. how did this happen or does my engine suppose to turn over clock wise? its a 72 super bug

hmmm...i'm not dglvk...but...is it a high performance cam? cause i know some of the grinds for lift on those lobes can be pretty aggresive. maybe that's what's opening your exhaust valves too early! or did you use stock or aftermarket pushrods...cause maybe the lengths are different!! racey old rockers? it sounds like maybe it's somewhere in the valve train!

as far as your motor turning over...i'm pretty sure that once it's mounted in the car that it shouldnt turn over at all...it should stay stationary.

Could your cam be in 180 deg to your crank? or something like that???

I'm thinking that the firing order is messed up. Make sure the distributor is pointing to no. 1 cylinder, when no. 1 cylinder is actually at TDC.
It's not uncommon for people to put the distributor drive gear in the wrong way, and then just plop the distributor in on top, and think it is going to work well.

thanks for all the help i figured it out , now it is running but the idle sucks i can drive it down the street but when i come to a stop it dies
