So I had a few spare minutes tonite, and started crawling around the notch, looked at the battery and saw this.
The battery has a second power wire from the pos. terminal that runs to what looks like a ceramic cylinder, directly across from that the wire leads off to another battery terminal, there is also a second ground strap on the other side of the tunnel. What's the deal with that??? Is it a 6 volt thing? this is the first 6 volt era car that I have owned that was still 6 volt.

pre -eletronic splitter dual battery set up.pretty cheesy eh?used to see it in trucks with campers a lot

Are all the bulbs 6 volt?
If not two six volts hooked up together make's a twelve volt
(my early MGB's were like that)
Also Landcrusiers (two twelve makes 24 volt)

hmm....I'll have to check the bulbs, I know thw generator is 6 volt still, so i imagine the bulbs are. But your right oldfart, chessy indeed.
