My 1964 Beetle
« on: May 10, 2011, 10:47:54 PM »
Hello everyone, I was a member of this forum a few years ago and I guess I forgot about it. But Im glad to be back! Its great to have a local aircooled forum! and I cant wait to get mine back on the road and cruise with you guys!

Anyways, I bought my 1964 Beetle in 2008 after I sold my 1984 Vanagon. I drove it for about a year and it it didnt run great (burned oil like crazy) and tried to sell it. I took it to a shop in Abbotsford called Abby Country Motors to get a oil change and valve job and when I got it back the guy there (Dave Bowering. Anyone know of him?) said that there were a few things wrong/dangerous with my car that needed fixing. We worked out a plan that me and my dad could come in on weekends and after work to work on it and get it back into tip top shape. Now its turned into a complete pan-off restoration!

Heres a shot of my van when i got it:

And heres some of my beetle in the first year or so that I owned it and it was still on the road:

I broke off the hide away exhaust trying to back into my driveway, so i had a stinger for a little while:

A few shots from a couple Abbotsford Dubberz.com meetings:

Here are some pictures from when I was trying to sell it/Just before taking it apart:

Thats all for now, tomorrow ill get into the restoration pics for you guys...

Ok here some shots from when it made it to Abby Country Motors:

Pan fully stripped, my dad cleaning it off

Me, caulking the freshly welded new pan halfs

The tranny in parts on the bench

Assembly of the new motor

the back end back together

the stripping of the body at my house

Then the body went for paint at my friends dad's shop in langley, heres a shot of it back on the pan in Abby Country

Dashboard slowly coming together

This build brought to you by Pabst Blue Ribbon!

Bumpers w/o over riders and vintage fog lights

Hella reverse lights\rear fogs

Brm's on

I bought these headlight grills but they are almost impossible to put on.

Well that is the past 2 years recapped in a few pictures, I got a couple more for tomorrow

Here is what it pretty much looks like right now. This is just before i got the door window seals done (but it has to go back to the glass shop because they did something wrong and the glass gets scratched when its rolled up/down)

The stance isnt where i want it to be, the front needs to be down wayyyyyy more and the back could use some bigger tires.

Its pretty much completely done except for my mechanic is having trouble getting it through aircare...  >:(

The scratches run from bottom to almost the top, and im pretty sure one if not both the pieces are original glass  :'(

dude that one sucks, could they be on the inside? how was the chrome trim installed i have seen it before where they rub on one of the stupid clips that hold inner and outer rubbers on and is a total piss off hope they can figure it out for ya, if not i know a couple good glass guys that, well atleast one of them like vws  ;)

I think the scratches are on the inside...Cant remember though. Im going to take it back to where i got the glass done and hopefully they will do something about it. If not, ill get at you about the glass guys you know

Right now i'm having a aircare predicament...my mechanic has run it through 3 times and it hasnt passed (Uggghghhhhhhhhhghhghh) First time he got kicked out because oil pressure was too high and the engine started spewing oil everywhere, so we put a oil breather setup on it. Second time failed because the car was backfiring. The third time he took it to the langley one instead of abbotsford and it failed again. So hes giving me two options: A)Insure it out of the lower mainland, where aircare is not needed which would be fine except if I get in a accident, my insurance is pretty much void because im pretty sure ICBC would look into and find out that i dont actually live where I said I did. Or option B) Him pulling the motor and putting a aircare motor in it to run through and charging me for labour, or me doing it if\when I have time. But I also thought of an option C) Getting it insured out of aircare territory and taking it to someone\somewhere else to try and get the motor thats in it through aircare... which also might be expensive, and might not pass...

ackkkk! >:(

Post your registration number or VIN so we can have a look at the test results, also what carb and distributor are you running?

car looks great! good work!!

i'd give up the idea of the out of aircare territory insurance option. too risky & too easy for s#!t to go sideways after even the smallest fender bender. just my opinion.

X 2 what busdaddy said. also, what's the status/history on the motor (compression/leakdown/power balance test results, last aircare, last time run, etc)

The reggie and vin are in abbotsford with the car, and I live in vancouver...If you fail aircare do you get a grace period where you can get it temporarily insured while your getting it fixed? I cant remember...

The motor is a fully rebuilt 1835cc I believe, although I dont quite remember, and I dont know all the specs of it. I think I might have found a way to get it to pass aircare and Im gonna try early this week. Wish me luck!
