Cylinder head gaskets
« on: March 12, 2011, 04:39:42 PM »
Hi,

May be a stupid question but I took off the cylinder head on my 1600dp and there are no head gaskets. Is this normal? Do I put it back with no gaskets as well?

Help please

No gaskets is correct. The top of the cylinder seals directly against the head.

I have worked on many engines and have never seen a cylinder head with no gaskets...These Vw's are very cleverly built little cars..

Thank you for your input Dave, now its time to get greasy again...

we hand lap each cylinder into the head with a little valve grinding paste
then wash it all completely out with water and soap
