Author Topic: BN2 Beetle Brackets / Ducting - Photos needed (Read 7818 times)

So I've got my BN2 heater working on the bench and pumping out good heat (still need to fine-tune the metering pump, but try finding a graduated cylinder in Squamish!).

Problem is, I pulled the heater out of a '72 Super, so the brackets are all wrong for my '69. Does anyone have a heater installed in a 70' or later Standard Beetle? I'm hoping for photos of the brackets, ducting and exhaust pipe so that I can start rummaging through Airspeed member's parts bins to find all the bits I need

You will need to go to this site and download the appropriate sections for the late BN2 into T1 installation. It will list the various parts etc. and give you the templates for cutting the various holes.

I got my late BN2 (also from a 72 Super) running in the fall but never go around to installing it in my 73 Standard. It is a little hard getting the rear set of points to open once every 33 rpm. I settled for about 1-30 for now. Seems to run fine with no black smoke, cycles on and off etc.

The brackets that I have came from a 71 Standard with the early BN2 - Hardi pump and pressure reg. so look for a heater of that vintage for the fresh air tubes, brackets etc. Was going to use that unit but the regulator is toast and there are not many around that are any good.

Yeah, I have the install instructions and my car was cut for a Gas Heater back in it's past. BusDaddy might even have the brackets for me, if I can show him what they look like. The pdf documents don't show the Type 111 brackets, only the T113...which I already have.

I'll have a look here tomorrow. I didn't bother to separate out the parts for the 71 BN2 so I will have to trial and error on my car. Hopefully there won't be too much rain. I think there are only 2 brackets, the side cover and 2 plastic tubes.

I have some spare cabin return ducting from the install in my 63, pretty sure the plastic bits are similar enough to use if you need them. Not perfect but usable....

In the meantime...I've found photos of the parts I need to make / acquire....

So far I know I need tubing 33, 32, 72, 73 and 10. I would love to find brackets 20, 21, 22, 18, and 15...but I suspect that's going to be tough. I'm hoping that if I have the interior ducting I should be able to ball-park the positioning of the heater enough make my own brackets.

I managed to buy 79 and 80 off a guy in Saskatchewan...so I'm one step closer to heat.

Since it might help someone down the road, here's real photos of the bits that I found:

Installed position.

Exhaust and combustion air intake. Not sure I understand why the big curve is needed on the combustion air intake. The exhaust pipe looks like it will be fun to fabricate...

I have a template made from an original car, as well as pictures of the hole locations if that would help. Earlier car but I think the differences are minimal. Does your car already have the holes?

My car was cut for a gas heater at some point. The interior cabin holes remain, the exhaust port and bracket holes were welded over (not sure why only those). I can't find any marks for the combustion intake holes...but I really don't see that as being a big issue, as I can measure using the original install instructions.

I do not have brackets 15 and 18 from the Super to compare them to those from the 71 Standard but they could be made easily from 1" x 1/8" flat bar. Haven't located tubing 32 and 33 yet (from 71 Standard) to get a part #.

Your car would likely have come with a B2 heater and the brackets are quite different for that unit. Don't know about the hole locations.

That's really weird. The BN2 (newer version with the metering pump) I pulled from a 72 super came complete with brackets, and there is 100% no way you could use them in a standard. One mounts to the top of the Left strut, for instance. Trust me, I would have used them if possible! Exhaust pipe and intake pipe are also quite different.

I have seen the thread you mentioned, it involves the older BN2 which has some of the brackets integrated into the body of the heater. Based on the installation instructions the ducting for interior didn't change positions between the older BN2 and the newer BN2...The ducts are use able with either model of the heater. Exhaust piping is different between the two models.

*edit* going back to read that thread, definitely finding some interesting stuff. I must have read it earlier on when I was still working on getting mine running.

If you have two sets of the brackets, do you want to sell a set?

Here are the brackets that I removed from the 71 Standard. The 3 in the middle are identical to the ones I got with the gas heater (in a box) from the 72 Super - a Marathon beetle. Actually a good part of the car came in boxes. Never did locate the 2 mounting brackets for the outer protection cover. What do you have?

I believe your super brackets are standard beetle brackets.

Here's the set of brackets I pulled from the 72 super...

The bracket on the left is the outer shield bracket which is closer to the windshield. The little hooked piece mounts into a rubber tube, and becomes the rear-most bracket. Next bracket in from the left is the front most bracket, next one over is the middle bracket and then the front-most protection plate cover.

There's a good chance I'm going to be down in Vancouver tomorrow. Any chance I can borrow one of your bracket sets for a week?

I can confirm Dave's bottom pic is parts from a 1302 Super. That's what mine had.

I think the major holes in the body are the same to mount a B2 like what was used in 69, and those holes for a BN-2 in a 71 or later Standard. So the ducting should fit.

So I dropped into see Rob at AVR yesterday, and managed to dig up a couple of the duct pieces I need out of the "used parts section" of the store. Andrew showed up in his Red Bay, and mentioned he had some more bits I'd be interested in at his place. A couple of minutes later and I have a rather unique BN2 propane conversion to play with

Andrew also had a rotten, but mostly intact exhaust pipe:

I was able to use the top section, and fab'd up the rest of it.

The "foot" piece (which I gather protects the front tire and ensures the exhaust isn't getting water pushed up it) was missing, but The Samba had directions on how to make one. Now I just need to coat it all in high-heat header paint. With the exhaust finished, and the interior duct pieces I have...I think I have enough to make up some brackets from scratch.

Years ago I had to make up an exhaust pipe. When I was done, I also painted it with hi-heat exh paint. It didn't help, though. It rotted right through in about 5-6 years. Better would be to get it jet-hot coated.

The replacement for my rotted one was SS. The only problem is finding 1¾" SS tubing.

I did note your posts on the Samba to that fact. I've got plenty of access to stainless in the right sizes, just not on the timeframe I wanted. No worries, i'll do up some drawings and then i can make another in the next two years from stainless

A buddy in Squamish has a '72 standard bug out back with...wait for it...BN2 installed! Borrowed the two brackets I could actually get out of the car, and voila! I have a set for my car.

Yup. Though I have discovered once you've got a nice set of large calipers it's really simple to mark out all the holes correctly!

Getting there...gotta do the fuel pump tomorrow, and figure out some brackets for the luggage shield. It's just resting in the photo.

...may have gone a bit overboard with the Heat shield products...but I had some left over from the rally car, so why not?
