here is my 2 cents: two-tone gives a very " original through and through " look. Not a bad choice. It says to me " I like it the way it was made". A solid single tone colour can have a sportier look IMO. You can still have all original, but I feel the red and black would also go very well with a customized car. Red will always turn heads ( as long as its bright ). black is definitely a " meaner " colour. Now coming from a Licensed Bodyman & Painter, if you are doing the bodywork and paint yourself, do not go with black. I will assume ( bear with me on this one ) your experience in painting and bodywork is little to none. Not to insult anyone, but, home done projects are very rarely as straight and shiny simply from a lack of experience and know how. Black will show EVERY imperfection. -Even on cars I repair and paint I get "oh, crap I missed that" moments  :o. Always too late. Black is very hard to keep clean and keep scuff free. Unless you are meticulous  in waxing and polishing black is a bitch to keep nice. If it really doesn't matter what others opinions are and if you are not a perfectionist like me, then the hell with the last bit :D.
Bottom line: lighter colours are easier to maintain, and your gonna do whatever you want anyway :D

I agree with what Jerome said. Unless your getting Stefan to paint it, dont go black.
Personally, red body with a black roof would look pretty good IMO.

If there is white on the inside - seats/doors I would stay away from black.

L87, Pearl White, for the roof and L456, Ruby Red for the base.  The colour would appeal to a wider audience as well in my opinion and stock 63 colours.

Interestingly in the Samba classifieds there were very few two tone ghias for sale.  Here is a red with white roof one:

And the black roof one:

What are you doing for wheels?  I forgot.  That's maybe where a little black comes in.

My thoughts.

PS folks: I think his painter is up to the challenge from what I have seen of his work.

coming from someone who paints every day, i did my baja bug in tremclad white, with a foam roller. and my street beetle is flat black cloverdale speed enamel.   i have to fuss over my paint jobs all day at work, when i come home, i just want to enjoy my beetles, not stress over door dings, rock chips and scratches. and i didn't pick the colours till i went to the paint store to buy paint

but hey, thats my opinion. its YOUR car, do what YOU want.

as for black, if you add some silver pearl into it, it will hide scratches and paint swirl like a hot damn. just look at a new dodge or gmc truck
the customer is always wrong

Then some research is in order to ensure that the colour, and indeed the whole presentation of the car is one that will appeal to the widest possible audience.

Too bad there wasn't a way to access the ads on the Samba in a way that would tell us what sold, for how much and what was known about the buyer.  From what I can see in the Samba Ghia ads the ones that appear to be street ready and not highly modified are a solid, relatively stock colour.  If you put it back to its original red, and somebody wanted a different colour roof, that could easily be done to make the sale.  You have a few sets of wheels, and probably could add and subtract on the motor components.

My thoughts.

Solid black it is.!!

The car is just a bone stock driver, turn key, new interior, new floors, complete restoration, ect.
I only replaced headlight buckets and rear bottom forward sills, not much for a ghia.

already welded and smoothed going into primer tommrow.

Thanks cheers!

Paint has no feeling's so I went with black, have not applied yet, so ya never know.

My 65 square was going to go brown and white pearl, and changed to green and white at the last moment

50 buick was red and black and red became blue at the ninth hour.

I call it the %&$^ hour last hour before you spray..................................what color do you really want!!
