Almost stole a car today.
« on: October 27, 2010, 08:01:42 PM »
My wife drives a 1997 Jetta that we took to the gym tonight.  Upon leaving the gym I walked over to the passenger side of the car and waited for my wife to unlock the car (she had the keys).  I pulled on the door which seemed to stick a little and was about to sit down when I noticed the interior was grey.  My wifes car is black on black.  I quickly jumped out and noticed her car about 3 stalls over.  We locked the car back up, and jumped in my wifes car to drive home.  As we drove past the imposter I did notice it was the VR6 model not the 2 point slow that we own.  I guess I would have been an accessory to the theft since she was driving.   8)

That happened to me once with an old monte carlo that i owned.
I did some research and disovered that with the chevy's at least 2 in 100,000 keys will be cut the same.
The chances of two people with the same key being in the same parking lot at the same time have to be pretty slim.
Any mathematicians on the site that can calculate the odds on that?

Maybe it will happen the other way around next time!!  Might want to think about some extra security for yours.   Hopefully the other person would be as honest as you.  If not??

This may not be as uncommon as one would think.  In some industries the odds are a lot less than 2 in 100,000.  Wonder what VW would admit to.

At one point I had 3 watercooled vw's here and one set of keys would open 2 cars.  The keys weren't exactly the same but with wear the key would just turn in the lock and they weren't even from the same year.

In the late 60's I was walking across the Pattullo bridge one afternoon and found a GM key lying on the sidewalk. When I got home, an uncle visiting from Sask. was there with his 58 Pontiac, surprisingly the key fit the ignition and started right up.

I dont think it all that uncommon, specialy as the keys start to wear. When I was going to BCIT I had a 91 S10 and a guy in my class had the exact same year/ make/ model. My keys fit in his door and his ignition but his would not open or start my truck. One day after class he stayed late to finish a project so I drove his truck to the other end of the lot and left it there, he was smart enough to know I did it and didnt think it was stolen so he meandered around the parking lot for an hour till he found it, He was sure pissed at me the next day.
I am sure some kid in my neighborhood has a key that will unlock the door on my 2000 GMC. I know I lock it (horn sounds when it locks and I always double check it) but twice now I have come out in the morning to find my drivers door open with absolutely no damage, first time they took my CDs now I leave absolutley nothing in it.
I also recently learned that all travel trailers/ 5th wheels and campers have the same key for the storage doors. When I asked our sale guy about it he couldnt give me an answer other than for simplicity and cost. Whats the point of having a lock?

My buddy had an old Honda Civic in the mid 80's, and his key opened and started more than a few of the same cars.  We used to open them up and mess with the wipers and radio, etc... but never damaged or stole anything.  'Just bored kids I guess??   ;D
