If its popping through the intake, it is most likely lean. If you have a can of carb cleaner or intake cleaner, spray it down the carb while you rev it up, if it doesnt pop and revs better then you are lean. With the engine off, look down the top of the carb and snap the throttle, their should be a squirt of fuel from the accelerator pump. If not, you have an accel pump problem. If you have a squirt of fuel. then put your air cleaner back on (to prevent the spray from being sucked through the carb and giving you a false reading) and spray around the intake where the carb bolts to it and where the intake bolts to the heads and check for a vacuum leak. It will start to smooth out and rev up if there is a leak. You may also have a fuel press problem or a gummed up carb. Hope this helps some.
