Lend a hand? im stuck in Van
« on: September 04, 2010, 10:03:56 AM »
Stuck in Van in my 64 bus, 1600 SP. It idles, but coughs and pops back through the carb when I go to pull away. I'm thinking it could be the advance weights in the dizzy being stuck or perhaps a gummed up carb. If anyone fancies a challenge, I have my tools with me but a simple carb and or dizzy swap would narrow the problem down right away ;)

hey mark...as per our chat in white rock on thursday...the accelerator pump linkage on your carb is seized and not working...you have to start with that & go from there.

unfortunatley i'm at work & wont be off until 6pm...i'll call you then & see if you still need help (but hopefully you get it sorted by then!)

cheers

If its popping through the intake, it is most likely lean. If you have a can of carb cleaner or intake cleaner, spray it down the carb while you rev it up, if it doesnt pop and revs better then you are lean. With the engine off, look down the top of the carb and snap the throttle, their should be a squirt of fuel from the accelerator pump. If not, you have an accel pump problem. If you have a squirt of fuel. then put your air cleaner back on (to prevent the spray from being sucked through the carb and giving you a false reading) and spray around the intake where the carb bolts to it and where the intake bolts to the heads and check for a vacuum leak. It will start to smooth out and rev up if there is a leak. You may also have a fuel press problem or a gummed up carb. Hope this helps some. Sorry but I am in Aldergrove so its a little far for me to come.

Hi guys, Thanks very much for the replies. Silas, I sorted out the accel pump on Friday with anew diaphram. Its pumping as it should now. Not sure about the rest of the carb tho. I have a rebuild kit with me so may just strip it down right here. I will also try the carb cleaner squirt to rule out the dizzy. I just hope I dob bt get a ticket!

Stripping the carb down now, but could do with more carb cleaner if anyone is close by.

Found out it can't be the dizzy advance weights as there aren't any.

I reall think its a carb problem, and try as I might I can't get it clean enough. Do any Vancouverites have a spare carb I could buy or borrow?

I'm glad you got her going Mark!  I just got home, but unfortunately I don't even know enough to help you out.  I could have, however, brought you a beer and pushed you to a place that you wouldn't have got a ticket.   ;D

Thanks Darren, Luckily my dad lives not too far away so he was able to at least bring food etc, plus I had another non-vw bud drop by and one of SteveO's drivers dropped off some carb cleaner.

I also had three people wanting to buy the bus, and a couple of pretty girls take photos of my predicament.

It could have been a whole lot worse, the weather was good and I got her going eventually.

Scene of the crime:

A piece of old carpet saves your knees, and kateboards are great for removing engines when necessary, and skimboards make good seats and 'sliders' for getting under a bus in the cold and wet and dirty . . .
