air care uuuhhhhrrr!!!!
« on: May 22, 2010, 05:27:27 PM »
Went through air care 3 times, the first 2 times too high hc's on idle and drive test,so, I take it to the mechanic(vw shop) he sets it up but tells me that its a fine line with with my set-up(dual kadrons and stock cam in a 1776)something about not leaving the exhaust open long enough or something like that.So I go today to test it and it fails, this time it passes on the drive test but not the idle. Am I the only guy with this set-up that is having this much trouble with aircare.I'm getting a lit tle discouraged:(, by the way this is a brand new rebuild (maybe 600 klm.) I am going to go back and see if there is anything that can be done, hopefully he can help.Just thought I'd vent,it make me feel better.

You may have to change cam.

My 2165Cc has a very much street cam SK41 (from CIP1/ GMB built) and has  had no problems for the last three years. It waS tunned once. iagree

Cam timing has nothing to do with it.  A stock cam is helping you.
IMO the problem is the carbs.  Kads are notorious for idling on 2 cylinders.  I've heard of more trouble getting Kads through than any other carbs.  Webers and Dellortos are easy.

Post your VIN number so I can look at the numbers.

Congratulations!  I've never seen anyone fail on all 4 readings before!

http://www.aircare.ca/inspinfo-get-results.php

Note, the HC readings of 2000ppm are not true readings.  You car is actually putting out much more.  You've just pegged the meter.

Did you have the Kads on there in Apr 2008?

What did you do between March and May 17 of this year?

What did you do between May 17 and the 22nd?

What distributor do you have?  What is the timing set to?

The first thing to do is stop using methanol or the wrong octane of gas.  You've proven that crap doesn't do squat.  In fact, the methanol actually contributed to the fail.

Get your timing figured out.  Measure both the idle and total advance.

What size are the idle jets?

5.5 doesn't exist.  It could be 55.  Check the size, and the one you took out.
Then get the timing specs.

i have kadrons on my 1641 with an engel 110, and yeah it idled on 2 cyl to say the least. i fixed it with some advice from cip. you need to expand the plenum volume in the intake manifolds. if you're running steel manifolds you're screwed, but if you run aluminum, heres what you do: get a die grinder with a long bit and remove the divider on the inside almost all the way down till about 1" to 3/4" from the bottom and remove as much material as you dare from the walls.( i got a can of graphite cutting lubricant and used lots on the bit to prevent the aluminum from clogging the teeth, it helps a lot!)

after that it ran a lot better. i dialed down the idle jets some more and now it now it idles great no matter what fuel grade i feel like running. i also use a dwell meter on my points instead of feeler guaging it, you'd be surprised at what a difference that makes as well.
the customer is always wrong

yes they are 55 and the other ones were 45,as for the timing specs I borrowed one of those digital timing lights but didn't know how to read it,all I know is that the r.p.m.was at about 725-735.The mechanic must have slowed it down. After I went to test again(4th time) it passed everything but idle,so I went back to the mechanic to let him see the the papers and he told me that it's probably because of the meth.He told me to burn up that gas or syphen it out and use new gas then go to his shop where he will probe it before I go back to aircare.

.... the r.p.m.was at about 725-735.
Stock spec is 850-950.  Higher idle speed helps at aircare, so by setting below 750, your mechanic has partly caused your trouble.  For aircare, you should always set your timing to 1000-1050.  If your idle speed is above 1100, they can terminate the test, although they don't automatically measure it.

You need to figure out how to read the timing.
