Does anyone know who this group is?

http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/cto/1743660157.html

I have never heard of such a gathering. It seems like they have done it in the past. Anyone on this forum go?

I sent them an email.  Maybe something will come of it.  Did see a couple of T2's in the pics so I bet we would be welcome.

Wouldn't hurt if there was a local group more oriented to the later T2's, Vanagons etc.  It seems like many of the larger centers on the prairies and back east are able to support van oriented clubs so why not here?

So as a former Vanagon owner and a recent  T2 adoptee, when will I know that I have been cured of the "snooties"?

When you wave to fellow bus pilots and pretty well any ACVW, seems most Vanagon drivers feel they are too evolved to stoop to our level ::) Not all of em, but it's pretty rare to get a wave back.

I've owned at least one ACVW for the last 42 years so I've done my share of waving, flashing headlights etc.  So I'll keep waving, even to the Vanagon types.

Did get a wave from a guy in a Syncro the other day so I guess they are not all that way.

Unfortunately there are not many ACVW's on the road over here on the north side of the river to wave at.  Don't know where all those so called daily drivers are either?  Must be out on the road on Sunday morning when I am in church.

Do keep running into this dude driving an Astro van though!

I think you're over-thinking things. Many Vanagon people don't expect a wave from you in your older bus, or anyone else. Not snootiness at all.

In the last two years of driving my Vanagon (and I have owned Bay's before that), I might get the odd returned wave from another Vanagon guy (not Westy folk), but the 'snooty pre-1980 VW' crowd just turn up their noses, and pretend not to notice me driving by.

Now, as a Brit bike and former Japanese and Italian bike rider, I know that true snootiness with a holier-than-thou conceit is handed out for free with the purchase of a new Harley Davidson . . .

We're not turning up our noses.  Simply trying to search out that whiff of warm air that only exists in the ceiling area.  Good news though.  Summer is coming and I will have a gas heater by fall so I will be able to look you in the eye and give you a wave.

And I will have sold the Vanagon and have my Splitty on the road. So I'll be turning my nose up at you lowly, far-too-numerous Bay window drivers as I cruise around town with my unfeasibly smug grin, clearly visible through open (but leaky) safari windows . . . .  ;)

Are you putting the gas heater in from scratch? I am going to have to do the same for my '64, or I might not have a girlfriend come the autumn/winter :)

Gas heater from scratch.  My bus is originally from California so it came with a/c but no gas heater.  One of the condensers is located where the BA6 would normally go.  I've been looking for a good BN4 to put in the engine comp. but those new Espars are tiny and will go anywhere. Saw a pic of one installed in the jack storage area - right side of walk thru.  Kind of pricey though.  As well there is a propane unit called Propex that is very compact and can fit in a small space.

I'll wave back if a Vanagon waves at me, but there are so many around here that I would constantly have to keep my hand off the steering wheel in anticipation of a constant wave! I like to reserve my "hang loose" sign for the baywindow crowd ;)

I have seen photos of gas heaters installed up at the kick panel, and even under the front seats. Until I get around to doing that though, I will be using a Mr Heater indoor heater. They are designed for indoor use, and have knock-over shut off and some sort of alarm (carbon monoxide?)

I had one of those Mr. Heater things in my first bus, a 59 van and that was 40 years ago.  Mounted under the dash on the passenger side.  Problem was they had no auto shut off back then so you really had to pay attention if the fire went out and the gas continued to flow.  Could fry an egg on the under dash tray too.  Had a bench seat with one of those cargo dividers with a window in it.  Stayed very warm in the cab.

Looks like we have really hijacked this thread.  Haven't heard back on the email I sent yesterday.

I own both a bug and a T3 syncro doka ,I hang loose most custom vw`s that see,it is hard to tell if your gonna be snubbed lookin at the stockers ,van or bug`s. I seem to get equal love back when driving both vehicles though i get a lot more " what the hell is that"  "Ive never seen one of those" "Hey dude somebody stole half your van" when i roll the syncro.
No snooites here ,I never snub the acvw`s when rollin the T3, nothin but love....

So I heard back from the fellow that posted the note on Craigslist.  They have a thread on the Samba:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=396910&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=vancouver&start=0

Looks like they are mostly a Vanagon bunch and are trying to start a van club.  Good for them I say.  I have been put on their email list so we'll se how it goes.

You can get on their mailing list either by replying to the Craigslist ad or to their post on the Samba.

No.  We are temporarily on the beach with a leaking gas filler neck seal.  Hopefully I can have a new one within the week.  CIP1 says they are back in stock, just not in the inventory yet so I'll give them a few days rather than buy from the US.

Have some of the FI stuff off to get the firewall out so as to get at the filler tube, vent hoses etc.  Might as well do the whole thing while I am in there.  I guess you can't expect this stuff to last forever.

Don't think the Vanagon types would appreciate me showing up in my old Dodge van.  Anyways it's Pitt Meadows day tomorrow so can't miss that.

Yeah, I won't be going either.  I don't think I could swing a random camping trip with some people I've never met before. Also, I've got some bus stuff to attend to before heading down to Seattle to see the Subhumans on the 17th!

Not exactly a whole lot to wave at out here (Ridge/Meadows) in any event!!  Didn't see one other acvw on the road all week other than the blue bus.  All those daily drivers must be hibernating.  Maybe if they lower the tolls on the GE bridge, some of those Langley folks might bless us with their presence eh Steve.

Cover up your front plate (or remove it) and they don't charge you!
