Were the Olympics worth it?
« on: March 01, 2010, 05:39:42 PM »
after three weeks straight of 12 hour 24/7 work days... I can finally poke my head out of the broadcast centre and see what the olympics were like...(outside of  my 10x10ft edit suite!) Seems like there were lots of compliments on the shows, and I thought what made it all work was that if you didn't like what CTV had on, you could go to tsn or sportsnet and watch something else! I think my favorite moment was getting a hi-five from Lloyd robertson when Crosby scored the big winner for gold! Well worth the efforts, but a week to recover would be great! Back to real work on Wednesday...

I loved every minute of it. I took in a lot of the sights and good times around the down town area. What a great time!

This sums up yesterdays win!

i've got mixed emotions about the whole ordeal but i wont bring that here because it's not the time nor the place.

overall i am happy to say that i was very surprised, impressed and relieved to see the last 17 days go so well. i am extremely happy for all the athletes that got a chance to do what they do best and see what the west coast is all about and enjoy some of that welcoming canadian hospitality. i think most everyone was well behaved and there were very few incidents. i am very gratefull for the free events and entertainment and all the unique talent that we all possess that was shared with the rest of the world. and the outcome couldnt have been any sweeter. i think as a nation and as a province we really made an impact on the rest of the world as to how good we really are and how great we really have it.

like geoffs post above...still going hard at 1130pm last night....

Well put Silas. Our city will never see anything like that again. Those pics of granville street are quite historic really.

Leaving behind a thank-you note

Brian Williams, anchor and managing editor

After tonight's broadcast and after looting our hotel mini-bars, we're going to try to brave the blizzard and fly east to home and hearth, and to do laundry well into next week.  Before we leave this thoroughly polite country, the polite thing to do is leave behind a thank-you note.

Thank you, Canada:

For being such good hosts.

For your unfailing courtesy.

For your (mostly) beautiful weather.

For scheduling no more than 60 percent of your float plane departures at the exact moment when I was trying to say something on television.

For not seeming to mind the occasional (or constant) good-natured mimicry of your accents.

For your unique TV commercials -- for companies like Tim Hortons -- which made us laugh and cry.

For securing this massive event without choking security, and without publicly displaying a single automatic weapon.

For having the best garment design and logo-wear of the games -- you've made wearing your name a cool thing to do.

For the sportsmanship we saw most of your athletes display.

For not honking your horns. I didn't hear one car horn in 15 days -- which also means none of my fellow New Yorkers rented cars while visiting.

For making us aware of how many of you have been watching NBC all these years.

For having the good taste to have an anchorman named Brian Williams on your CTV network, who turns out to be such a nice guy.

For the body scans at the airport which make pat-downs and cavity searches unnecessary.

For designing those really cool LED Olympic rings in the harbor, which turned to gold when your athletes won one.

For always saying nice things about the United States...when you know we're listening.

For sharing Joannie Rochette with us.

For reminding some of us we used to be a more civil society.
Mostly, for welcoming the world with such ease and making lasting friends with all of us.

It was lots of fun.... and yes Silas, there's a whole other topic regarding the pro's and con's of the whole thing...
Overall, if you're going to spend a few, what was it, Billion???? might as well have a big party and have every person you see walking down Burrard St. cheering and smiling. I expect the last time such a sight was seen must have been at the end of the second world war.... quite an amazing feeling. (priceless?)
Thanks to Brian Williams getting off set for me to get a picture! :)

From what I saw it all looked pretty good on TV! There will always be people who say this or that about it, but I doubt it's a easy production to pull off anywhere. I had a friend that went up for a few days and he was shocked how well everything went and how laid back everything was.

Good job Canada  You_Rock_Emoticon

The coverage by CTV was fantastic.
My next door neighbors both worked the Calgary Olympics ( one with CBC as a sound tech and one with chek tv in production)
They both said that they couldn't stop watching because the quality of evrything that CTV aired was so good.
Well Done!!!!

I was not "for" the games, Just personal issue's with the amount of money spent, and other places it could have been spent better in my opinion.
BUT, That being said, I still participated in going to Vancouver and enjoying the moments, with my nephews and family and have a excellent time.
I watched almost every event, My pvr almost died and filled up mutiple times.
I think in the end it was great for Vancouver
And I enjoyed it very much.

I lived in Calgary when the Olympics were there.  I remember the atmosphere and hospitality like it was yesterday as I'm sure you that were there will for decades to come.  This Olympics was much the same from what I saw and the coverage by CTV was FANTASTIC.  I only wish I could have come down and participated as I did 22 years ago in Calgary.  Well done to all those who helped out and especially the volunteers.  With out them it couldn't have happened.

I was very much anticipating the olympics and participated by going downtown, shopping and i attended some events aswell.

I have to say, that of the time i spent downtown i didnt see 1 fight or get a bad vibe from anyone. Every person seemed to be enjoying themselvs,
its a great feeling.
