Importance of a face sheild

This just happened to our friends son who was grinding and the grinder kicked back badly or the wheel broke, didn't clarify which one it was.  Cut his top lip right through to the teeth, chipped his jawbone and teeth.  Missed his eye thankgoodness.  Has approx 100 stitches for now.    This happened on his 17th birthday.  My other friend works at Honda and the other tech there  also had the grinder kick  back, but he was wearing a facesheild,  the impact  completely dislodged his lower jaw, the face shield saved him, otherwise he would have been dead the doctor said.

A very sad and unfortunate incident indeed.  Each of us should pay attention.  Everyone of you must have a safety program at work.  How many of you can say you have one at home!!     

 
              For those of us who have young folks in our lives that work in and around vehicles, or anywhere else for that matter,

                                                      this is one of those teachable moments.

I work with grinders and cut off wheels all day, I've had some close calls and always wear a face sheild. accidents can still happen and it's not only your face to worry about, always wear gloves and keep loose cloths away from the grinder (i've seen shirts get caught and that leads to a cut off wheel in the chest!)A good friend of mine had a disc come apart and take out his face just like the pic but it also broke his nose! :'(

wow!! thanks for posting this. this is a lesson to us all
i think we have all at some time experienced kick back and broken discs etc.  ive even had a few close calls with broken discs pieces flying past my head . havent we all?
it makes me wonder how many of us use a grinder with the safety gaurd removed.  i know mine has been .
i think ill put it back on after seeing this .

My sentiment to the family.

It is a great example for all in here as some times we skip the mask while working on a small job.

I remember working on the old 66 with a grinder and  next morning having burn marks on my face, neck and chest because i did not wear the full mask and clothing to protect me.

Never!  I haven't seen a reason to remove it.

Whenever I'm using a bench grinder, I can't make myself stand right over top of it like that kid above was doing.  I always stand with my head to the side.  That way if the wheel flys apart, it's not gonna hit me.  I have the same aversion when working on a lathe.

Here's another one.  How many of you guys will do a quick tack weld without the helmet by just closing your eyes?

How many people check thier grinding disks for nicks or damage prior to grinding?

I see so many workers put thier grinders down hard that crack or damage the disks.

In the last month, I have removed 6 grinders from service vehicles because guards were removed.  Out of those 6, two of the disks had visible damage.

These grinders operate at 8000 rpm, and it does not take much of a nick to unbalance the disk and have it come apart at high speed.

Many people take power tools for granted, right up until the time that a serious injury occurs.

Thanks for the heads up, with my accident I got a piece under my safety glasses and the piece of wire from the wheel stuck in my eye. Thats a strange feeling when they freeze your and dig the piece out while your watching!

I have done it more than once. Fired up the cut off disc quick and used a "safety squint"............ think I am gonna go buy a shield now.............dam!!!!!!!

i remember one time while i was cutting one of my victims lims off, the chains saw kicked back and almost hit my dead in the face !!!... all because i hit a plate that was in there from a broken leg !!.. do your research on your victims ppl !!

just about castrated myself with one of those "knotted" wire wheel disks, not the cup but the type that has the braided spokes sticking straight out, grinder bucked and ended up in my lap with the trigger lock on took me a couple mins to un-wrap it from my shredded covies

Not bragging and I hope he is okay, And Bruce ,yes the tacking thing .I have steel fabricated 11 years and have had or seen all of those examples Josh the wire cup brush in the nuts sucks .Even with a shield steel in the eye ,It happens so quickly and you can get to comfortable .Good reminder to slow down and go safe .My favorite is my flaming coveralls well welding in a encloded space good thing for the buddy system

ive found a good way to prevent getting hurt, be to lazy to get to the garage/shop seems to work well for me!

   Mind you getting to the shop can be quite a hazard aswell...Especially if there is stairs involved.... Good luck to the boy. Hard lesson to learn.

i once had a zip cut wheel come apart around the shaft. i went just under my left armpit, missed my co-workers nose by about 1", and we found the disk over 150' away in the parking lot.we laughed about it after, but we were both shook up understandably. we both got very lucky

Got my left hand stuck in a belt sander when I was 17. Working in a steel fab shop straight out of high school. Lost half my thumb. Well, didn't lose it (it was still hanging there) they just couldn't put the other half back on. The biggest problem I had after that was hitchiking. I only got a ride half way. 

On a serious note I wish this lad a speedy recovery. Just remember bones will heal and chicks dig scars.

I forgot to post what I found out last week.   The grinder wheel came apart, it was a thin cut off wheel.  He was wearing gogles only.  All the stitches were pulled out few days ago, just a big scar now.  Amazing how fast it heals.
