I just sent a deposit on my T2!
« on: June 25, 2009, 05:43:44 PM »
1968 Riviera top that is. If all is well, I will be picking it up next week from Oregon. The bus seems really solid(check out the gallery for pictures), minus the battery corner, and the guy is super nice. It's 100% complete(including the rear bumper not shown) and mostly original, other then a respray from roof down a while ago. Special thanks to Mark aka Busdaddy for emailing back and forth offering his opinions on different prospects and basket cases. LOL :D

I'm currently looking into getting help with that battery corner as I don't think it would be appreciated if I welded in my underground parking, LOL.  ;D
All input welcome!

Very nice! Wish mine was in as good shape as that when I bought it. Congrats!

Thanks Geoff, I'm really excited!   8)

BTW, does anybody know if I'm right in assuming that it won't pass the inspection until that corner is fixed? :-\

Because from the sound of it, the rest of the bus has a good chance at passing, other then flasher not working. I'm assuming it will most likely need brakes to one degree or the other as well, although they DO work.
Now I have to see about getting it here. The plan is to send a bill of sale and get the paperwork ready beforehand, like it was discussed in one of the threads on here, then drive down with my wife in the GTI carrying a toolbox, spare fuel pump, gen. belt and such, and drive it back. A bit of a leap of faith but... I've done worse things, LOL.

I just went through this last week. Make damn sure your bill of sale has both your name and the sellers name on it as well as vin# and date and get the previous owner to sign it .You also need to make sure the vehicle title is signed on the back by the previous owner. My biggest hurdle I had was gettin the insurance on it. Beleive me.... I would rather take it through the inspection again than deal with all the different morons at the insurance places.... >:( >:( >:( I had my inspection done at Walnut Grove Auto Tech. They were thorough mind you but VERY fair as to what needed to be fixed for a pass. It was $100+taxes and they didnt charge me for a re-test.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the tips! And yes, I know that ICBC is full of morons first hand! When I sold my KG I left in Saskatoon, it sold, ironically, to somebody here. I left it in my brother in laws name over there for insurance purposes(sold it to him for a buck). With the new owner, we had hell of a time getting the ownership transfer. The stupid ass person the new owner was dealing with spent 15 minutes trying to convince us that the owner has to come PERSONALLY with the car to sign it over!!  ::) ::)

i'd get the corner and the tray fixed before going through the inspection.

aswell as a performing a thorough inspection of brakes, bearings, balljoints, tierods, steering box, electrical, oil leaks, etc...a previous owners idea of "condition" and yours may differ.

nice score and good luck with the aquisition...i'm sure it'll be adventurous and you'll be rolling it on canadian soil in no time!!! 8)

Good looking ride. Looks pretty solid for a '68. I like those old camperized vw's. My parents bought a '68 Westfalia in 1968 and drove it off the lot in Germany and rolled it through Europe for the next 18 months. Then put it and themselves on a freighter back to Montreal and drove back to Vancouver.

I don't think you need to worry about that rusty corner.  Part of the reason they look for rust is so rusty holes don't let exhaust gases into the interior of the car.  The other reason is structural integrity.  Neither of those apply to that corner.

Unless the battery falls thu the rust hole ;D It looks minor as far as rust in that area, good luck.

Thanks guys. One correction on my part - the title states 69, not 68. So it's a 69. Not that it matters that much.
