Fired from the Vancouver Sun after 47 years!
« on: June 04, 2009, 10:41:40 PM »

Thats right, After 47 years the Vancouver Sun fired my Dad as a way to try and save some money...LOL! He was given 3 months notice and his final day (cartoon) was this week but they decided not to run it ;D Could that be because they wanted the public to think he retired and lets just say his last cartoon told the truth in only the way a brilliant cartoonist could. I don't know if that cartoon will ever be published but i sure hope it will.

Anyway, I know some of you check out my Dads cartoons thru the week and have for many years. Thank you to everyone who has had a laugh and enjoyed  his outlook on life.

Here's a few links to the story.

Talented people move on for the better helooks like he,ll do fine .Companies that make unwise decisions don't last long I see the beginning of the end for the sun and as an artist who like s cartoons one less person buying the Sun . Geoff your Dad has incredible talent and will do fine with whatever his next project will be . Martin

Hey Geoff,

Terrible news about your Dad. I'm in a similar line of work and the whole contractor thing can be good..  And bad for sure.

As you know, Canwest is financially fucked and they're looking for ways to trim newspaper budgets so they can make them more attractive to a buyer.

I hope he can put himself into a position where he can enjoy an early retirement and do a few books and other things that fill the void of the daily.

Geoff, your dad is destined for better things.  The print media is becoming an endangered species due to the collective usses.

what was his last cartoon?

He probably can not publish it due to previous cantract.

Sorry that this happened to him. It is not so much about the drawing but, more so...about his perspective of current events....It is the brain behind the drawing that communicates a view of what iis going on.

If he got fired, the contract is void.  The Sun doesn't own anything he draws from now on.

That sucks about your Dad, a friend in Toronto that worked for the Star was let go after thirty something years, I hope that he gets a buyout, she did. She now is doing freelance travel and photography work and enjoying it very much so tell your Dad to keep his chin up and enjoy his time off.
