You think this would pass the provincial inspection?
« on: June 04, 2009, 04:42:10 PM »
Been looking for my Super Beetle with no luck for a while now, added bay window buses to the list and I found a bus I like. It's in US so it would need to pass the inspection. Now, the pop top has been damaged in a windstorm and although it comes with it, I'm wondering if I could pass the inspection as this:

LOL.

I'm thinking I'd get a ragtop instead of fixing the pop top and rock the topless style. I prefer the look by quite a bit anyway. O0
It's a 1970. Needs tires and is mechanically sound according to the owner. some surface rust but solid. Asking price is $2900.  :-\

What do you think?

A bit steep for a hacked up Westy IMO, looks like a nice bus though, the bottom line is does it give you a woody? It looks fairly solid but unless it's got a phone book sized file of receipts with it there's a good chance the inspection will go badly.

Any link to the Samba ad?

I see what you mean about a vauge ad, looks solid although it has been painted at least below the beltline (non Westy color) but from the gouge in the right side it was a while ago. All the upholstery is covered up so you know it's NFG.
Maybe post it up on the Samba bay forum, there has to be someone near it who will go kick the tires and crawl under it for you, at that price you don't have to worry about some ass scooping it out from under you.

Damn, looking around I thought the price is pretty good... if one got it for let's say $2500.

He seems to be one of those people that getting info from is pulling teeth. I HATE that.  ::) ::)
"Motivated seller" states the ad. WhereTF is that motivation? lol

$2500 would be a better deal, but that's still high for a bus with no roof and ripped up seats, and who knows what the engine's like. Still, if it is indeed nice and solid it's alot closer than something in AZ or NM and welding sucks.

He said he would gather some more pictures for me, especially underside and such and email it this weekend. We'll see how it goes.

Whats with you and fat chicks lately?
I don't see that price being that outta line if everything underneath checks out (no major rust issues etc). Considering the ridiculous prices people are asking and getting for bay window buses around here.

Dunno Trev, I'm on a plump roll(no pun intended) I guess, LOL. Well, I always liked bay window buses and as far as Beetle fat chicks go, well, German Look is oh-so-espec :D .
Also, they are cheaper and considering the fact that, weather it was a bus or a bug, it would be my only car and a daily driver - fat chicks are a good choice.
I thought the price was not that bad either for this one, if it checks out. Waiting for pics this weekend.

What do you think about this one guys?

"1972 Westfalia bus (NOT A POP-UP) 42K on new 1700 engine, 2 barrel Holley carb. tuned up and oil changed , ready to go for the summer. No rust, floor pan very good condition, interior in great shape, good condition all around. Original paint.145K on bus. $4000.00 OBO"

I just talked to the guy, he seemed alright. The bus actually has 114k on it, not 145k and the engine works out to have about 17k. Some kind of crate engine so bought it "brand new" by the lady he got it from. He was not at home, so he will call me back to tell me what kind of crate engine is in it. He's got the paperwork.
Apparently absolutely no rust anywhere, other then the fact that front is in white primer because the lady ran into a mailbox and left a dent in the front. He's willing to meet me so I don't have to drive all the way so I might go down. The only things I don't like about the 72 is the back tails and no access panel.  :-\

Opinions?

EDIT: The engine in it is... GEX. That puts ALL the nails in that coffin, don't you think?  >:(

Thats the worst year IMO. No access to the engine from the top and it's Type 4 power. I would stick to a pre 71 but again that's my opinion...and you know what they say about opinions.
Your right about GEX.

Seems like I have an asshole too, LOL as I tend to agree. I'm not crazy about those tails either, pre71s are a lot nicer. I'm on the lookout for 68-71. I'd gladly take a splitty but these days gold is cheaper.  ::) ;D
Nice find in the field btw!
