They came out because they split in the middle, notice some are sticking out both sides of the piston

definitely not diesel since black smoke wasn't pouring out of the stacks once he stepped on it. I have seen that happen on many Top Fuel Harley dragbikes when they hydraulic and explode when there was an spark problem (especially when mechanically driven fuel system is being used).
