Drive Clean
« on: March 30, 2004, 07:13:10 PM »
After reading Jame's story about the bank robber, in the Toronto Star, I started to look around. In the letters to the editor part, I found this letter about Drive Clean. \"Drive Clean\" is Ontario's version of AirCare. I thought it was interesting, and since some of you other forum members have opinions about AirCare, you might be interested also. I know a lot of Ontario residents see Drive Clean as tax grab.

The Star article here.

Gotta agree with the letter, I've taken my truck thru 3 times in one day - 1st time failed, went to the mechanics, put on his computer everything checks out, take back fail again (with an hour of last test) go back to mechanics, him and I go back to aircare and it passes with flying colors. How in the hell is that possible???? I went up on side and down the other of the manager about that one, all he could say is it may have been due to atmoshperic differences - BULLSHIT i told him as there was only a few hours from the fails to the pass.

I had just sold my 1969 beetle named \"leelu\" and decided to take my 1969reg 1967 beetle \"dameon\" to the shop, Just figured to let a shop deal with it and pick it up aircared after work (had extra cash lying around) So after work i head over to the shop and ask them \"Did it pass?\" they say \"Hell Ya!!\" so im all good to go, head off to the insurance agent and hand them the papers, sure enuf they brought the red leelu papers to the aircare place and aircared the now no longer mine car! Dirty bastards, So i ask the shop if i take it thru again will it pass, or did you guys do somthing special to make it! They respond\"nope just take her thru\" FAILED in all classes. Every reading was off the charts. So i make an apointment with the manager and explain what happened! (It is their boo boo they did not check the vin of the car) and she offers to take my papers and send them to head office, as i hand her the papers she shreads them up!
No evidence! (And i was going to the paper with them) and send me on my way..............I hope they burn in hell! Cheers Stevo_32 ]:(

That's an amazing story.  I've got a friend at Aircare head office, and I've sent him what you posted to see what he can do.

In the meantime, can you post the VIN numbers of both cars so we can all see what the numbers were?

Yes amazing it is, ended up costing me 500 bucks or so, I had the hardest time trying to understand how settings from one motor could be so screwed up! Everyone i know owns a shop or is a seller of aftermarket parts I have full confidence from all mechanics and air care specialist that what happend to my bug is not possible, I did however make photo copies of the origanal readings, I'll see if I can find those
The \"Aircare\" figured the issue was delt with once they destroyed the copies and retested the vehicle.
I hope to change that! (it was the abbosford aircare by the way)

Steveo, I've received a reply from my friend at Aircare and he will follow through with an investigation.  We just need the info from the tests.  The actual test copies you have aren't completely necessary.  If you post the VIN numbers of both cars, and the test dates, all the info can be easily pulled up by everyone on this forum.
There is a lot more information available to Aircare than is on your test report.  That might explain the wild readings you describe.

Steveo, you need to post your VIN if we want to take this investigation forward.

After working on alot of Aircare repairs I've seen some cars to be extremely tempermental.  Especially a vehicle equipped with a non catalytic exhaust sytem and carburetor. Now by stating this I am putting a time stamp on this type of car...YUP ITS OLD.  There are so many variables that will make a car fail.

Now for cataytic newer cars I see people shutting off the engines at the line. Thats not a very intelligent thing to do cause the catalytic will cool down and as you sit for a long time the car will get \"cold\" and go into open loop running rich. Hopefully as the car goes on the dyno it will reach its engines operating temperatures but still why chance it especially for a car with an older tired catalytic.

A technician at a local garage can look at your cars exhaust and look at the HC and CO readings but if they do not pay particular attention to the oxygen readings the HC and CO readings may be fudged on the Aircare test papers cause Aircare will determine if the exhuast has an exhaust leak.  Aircares program changes so frequently that they have different procedures for old cars and newer cars.

Hey James what did the \"mechanic\" do to determine its gonna run clean???? computer? do you mean gas analyser?? The North Van Aircare center was shut down an entire day about a month ago due to some major computer failure. The following day they made all the cars going in the test to do a LONG TEST meaning driving the car upto 90km on the dyno.  Usually they do the LONG test for questionable or failing cars. Even though my 67 beetle with original 75,000 miles runs extremely clean they made me go through the long test.  Aircare does have some issues.
