Where To Get A Vehicle Inspection?
« on: March 23, 2004, 01:03:32 AM »
I got an inspection order a couple of weeks ago and need to get an inspection.
Anyone know of a shop that is very VW friendly?  Cheap is also a bonus since there's nothing to find on my car.
I did  a pre-inspection inspection and everything works including the rear defogger.

I needed a BC inspection and found out that Canadian Tire can do it. If it's a Provincial Inspection I think all shops charge the same $75.

May I ask what prompted the inspection order? I can't imagine why a cop would single out your car...

Yeah Bruce. Tell the gang why you were singled out for a motor vehicle  inspection.

I'm going to suggest Adria Import Car Service 794 E Broadway, near Fraser. They specialise in German cars. Although I've never dealt with them, I've seen at least one hot beetle in their shop, that I believe belongs to somebody who works there.

My guess was Bruce was testing out the new Close CLOSE Ratio trans and doing doughnuts in 4th gear at 7000 rpm outside metrotown. Just a guess B)

Nope, it was with the old gearbox.  Just a little snakey burnout on Kingsway after midnight on a Sunday night.  I thought there wasn't another car in sight, but apparantly not.  It sure took him a long time to catch up to me even though I wasn't speeding.  I figure the inpection would be cheaper than the alternative.  At least he didn't write me up for no drivers licence.

I went in to Crappy Tire to see what they would say about the inspection.  The guy was telling me some of the stuff they check, then he said if you have a rip in the headliner, its a fail.  WTF is that????  Won't be going there.
I called Adria on E Broadway.  They are VW knowledgeable and charge $70, so I'll probably go with them.

i'm a licenced inspector if you want i can fax you a copy of the inspection sheet and you can go over it.
remember this is a motor vehicle safety inspection and thats it.
headlamp and bumper height are the biggest items the rest is obvious , horn
lights and general mechanical condition.
i would gladly do the paper work for you but at work if its not a staff car or a m.b product forget it.
i will try too find a friend that may be very easy going.

Bruce!
Good thing that British Columbia does not have such a thing as \"Exhibition of Speed\" in the Motor Vehicle Act. You're lucky to get off with an inspection notice. In California, Exhibition of Speed is a mandatory court appointment, and you must bring a lawyer. I know both Mark H and Mark V have experienced this, and it cost them a lot of money.

Let us know how your safety inspection goes with Adria. I'd like to get some feed back about their services, for the next time I get a inspection notice. Probably just a matter of time, too!

It would be kinda hard to call it exhibition of speed when I was going 40km/h at the time.  Below the posted speed limit of 50.

Adria is my second choice.  Darren told me of a place that may be completely incompetent.  That's gotta be the only form of auto repair where the customer wants the mechanic to be inept.

Exhibition of Speed is not related to your velocity. You qualify any time your tires make noise, or break loose. And it's basically up to the officer's discretion. Revving your engine will also qualify you for Exhibition of Speed. California enacted this big penalty law to combat street racing, and people showing off in their cars. I'm sure other states have enacted similar laws. Probably just a matter of time until it arrives in British Columbia.

Update:
I found a local place that was fairly easy going and got it passed.  The thing to do when looking for a place is to go in and ask what they look for.  It doesn't take long to determine if they are going to be anal.  I've mentioned the Cdn Tire on Kingsway about the headliner thing.  Another place near me saw my car from across the street and immediately said there would be problems with the lowered front.  I suspected he might be able to detect narrowed suspension, and other major susp mods so I didn't go with him.

The guy I went with didn't notice the lowering or narrowing.  I don't think he even knew Beetles didn't come with 4 wheel discs.  The only thing he didn't like was tires that were close to the indicators.  The spec is min 2/32\" (which is where the indicators are)  He wanted more.  I threw on some wheels and tires that had lots of tread and went in.  All he was concerned with was tight suspension, and no rust.  He only removed 2 wheels, and didn't measure any rotors or pads.  He just eyeballed them.  Then the basics, lights, horn.  Strangely he checked for play in the door hinges, and yanked on the bumpers.  He said rust was a big deal.

If anyone needs to get an inspection and wants to know who it is, PM me.
