Pict 34 trouble
« on: October 22, 2008, 12:36:54 PM »
The other day My bus stalled, I cleaned the idle jet, and it started right up.
20 minutes later, same thing. I took the carb off, doused it with carb cleaner, blew it out and rebuilt it.
Now I am having a few problems getting it setup nicely again.
I can not seem to get this pict 34 to idle.
Volume screw in out 2 1/2 turns
Bypass screw is out 3 turns.
Seems the choke opens all the way and the thing stalls and won't restart.

I looked at the info on the Samba and helped to a point but... any tips or tricks?
Or if someone can gimme a hand I'll shoot ya a few bucks.
This is my daily driver for hauling my kids around so I need it really quick, and am getting a little frustrated.
(hmmm no violin smiley)

If you can gimme a hand feel free to call me at 604.351.9469 or I'll check back here.

Thanks a bunch.

are you using a 009 or a vacuum advance distributor?

if you're using the 009, did you plug off the 2 vacuum ports on the carb (looking at the carb from behind the car...1 is on the left of the carb and 1 is facing you)?

also, check that your idle speed screw (the little screw that pushes against that stepped cam on the side of the carb where the throttle cable goes into) is set up correctly (i think it's screw it in until it's just touching then 1/4 or 1/2 turn more...but dont quote me on that). ;)

found on one of emilios links above....about the idle speed screw (or fast idle adjuster as they call it)...

Quote
Engine warmed up, but switched off. The screw on the throttle arm, which faces to the rear of the car is called the Fast Idle Adjuster. This works with the choke to give a smooth idle on a cold engine. Unscrew the Fast Idle Adjuster (sits on the stepped cam), until it is clear of the stepped cam. Now screw it in until it JUST touches the very bottom of the stepped cam - NOT on any of the steps themselves. Now screw it in another 1/4 turn - no more. This sets the throttle butterfly open the required .004 inch, so you can use the Bypass screw (read on) to set the idle speed correctly. Now leave the Fast Idle Adjuster screw alone.

Thanks Silas.

The bus is running as of 9:30pm tonight. lol.

The distributor is a Mallory Unilite Optical with a Flamethrower coil.
Swapped in a 009 with points and a Bosch blue, and vroom!

The way is was running was like either too much gas, or too much air, and since I had only
made changes to the carb, I blamed that. I tested the optical module and it checks out as good so
it has to be the coil.

I have to thank a second set of eyes, thanks Gary!
The kids can get to school in style now!  ;)

i was thinking carb too for the same reasons...but we all know trying to diagnose through a computer screen is like throwing foam darts at a board made of jello.

glad you got it sorted...and kudos to gary for coming to help you out. that guy is the bomb!!!

and sweet bus by the way...cant wait to see it in person sometime!!! 8)

Ya that was really great of Gary to come out after he worked all day.
I needed a fresh pair of eyes cuz at that point I was so overloaded that I couldn't see straight.

I'm loving it and have been snapping pics left and right. I have a few I'll post later today.
I wanted to come to the cruise with it, but had only had it for a week and didn't really trust it yet.
Now that the majority of the bugs and gremlins have been chased away,
she seems like she's gonna be a great runner!

Thanks again for the posts Silas!
