Fastest 1600cc quarter mile et times anybody ?
« on: October 18, 2008, 07:28:46 PM »
I was just sitting around remembering the early 80s when I first got into VWs and remembered a good buddy of mine named Lawrence's yellow 55 oval a car that some of you will also certainly remember , Anyways He was running a 1600 cc dual port engine with a mild cam , stock heads with bumped compression , dual kadrons , 009 I think for distributer and a dual quiet pack exhaust system , it was on an early 60 s pan with stock trans and maybe a HD clutch & plate assembly . Well heres the punch line he was running consistant 14.10s   which I still think was pretty remarkable even if the car was pretty basic. I'm just wondering if anybody else has stories of a non stroker non big bore car doing better times than Lawrence's did . Back in the same era the new Ford Mustang 5.0 LX 5 speed notchback ( the fastest version of the Mustang ) was tested by Road & Track magazine and it did 14.10 in the quartermile .

Hey can anybody help me here , I'm starting to doubt my 42 year old memory , does anybody remember the days ( circa 1984/5 ) at the Bug ins at SIR when Lawrence raced his yellow 55 oval , was he running 14.10s or was it 15.10s ? I may have made an error , either way I think it was pretty quick for low budget a 1600DP .

you can make 180 hp with a 1600, and put that in a high geared car with slicks , and you get mid to high 11's.   It has been done before, I feel that alot has to do with proper transmission gearing for fast times that are impressive, most of us want to drive on the road too so we might have good hp engines but the wrong gearing for that all out quick run. Something like  a bus box with 4.85 r&p 3.78,  2.06, 1.56, 1.12 you will get 8000 rpm at 114 mph which is a mid to high 11 run. put in a regular stock geared beetle transmission with the same motor and you will probably have a mid to low 13 second car.  Of course throw a turbo onto the same engine and you will have some good times too with a stock transmission.

Actually , reading that last post , I am now reminded that back in the day Hans K was running 12s with a homemade turbo setup which I think was 1600cc , if my memory serves me correctly , it was a 62 or 63 red sliding sunroof beetle , I recall him going through transmissions quite quickly , he had the transaxle swap down to no time flat getting ready for the next races that day so many years ago , if your read this Hans any input would be welcome .Going back to the start of this post I guess what really impressed me with Lawrences 55 oval was that the 1600 he was running really wasn't a big budget engine , Kadrons and quiet packs are not really what you think of when going for low ETs I would guess Lawrence's engine probably made about 85-90 hp at best .

I was on a 110 mph run with my turbo'd 1600 singleport 2 years ago but broke the crank at 1000'.  Managed  89 mph in the 1/8.  Once I am done with my 2110 singleport I will be building another 1600 singleport capable of handling  30 pounds boost to see if I can get into the 10's with a singleport.

Mickey Jennings has a 1600cc 12 second race beetle  in Washington.

Hey Dwayne, I remember Lawrences 55 beetle. Man, that was a long time ago!! I think he eventually got it into the high 13's if Im not mistaken. Do you remember the time at the Scottsdale Mcdonalds when this guy came up to him with a bright yellow tubbed out 70's Satelight with a stock motor and started talking trash about VW's, and Lawrence ended up spanking him bad? Good times!!  :D

A 1600 single port with 30 psi boost , I can't wait to hear what that will do , all this feedback is really cool , I think a 1600cc unlimited class would be a lot of fun , I think someone is already trying to make an unlimited 36hp class which is really cool too .

Hey Duayne, Lawrence sold the car to Rob Stirk years ago when he moved to Toronto. Lawrence is not on the forum but works for VW in Abbotsford. He comes to some of the shows once in a while. Married with 3 kids living in Chilliwhack.

Lawrence sold it when he was still working for Rudy Feeg. On weekends sometimes Lawrence would do burnouts down the side of Bow Wow up to Rudy's shops side door. When I talked to him at the time, he said the guy was going to use it for advertising car audio systems. It did go back East.

I'm not 100% but I think Hans engine was either 1776 or 1835 with turbo. He still has the motor. Hans put the motor in your buggy!!!!!!!!

Dwayne,
Here is a post that I found on the forum*

Maybe this post should be called a trip down memory lane!
Thanks Brian (Red Snapper for the comments) Yes, as you know,we don't follow the trends we set them(This is definately a test of memory)

Where should I begin, I remember back in the 80's HansK Had a shop off of Scott Rd.in Surrey, there were some cool cars I remember and always lots of parts there.  Frank Graff had his cool oval window, and I remember a guy named Darren that had a blue sunroof beetle that he used to show alot.  HansK-you probably also remember Greg , that had a Orange 71 super beetle that was a show car (I think it was Slyvesters)Later Greg had a gorgeous Green oval that Dwayne Farmer bought.  I remember driving past Darrel's house and seeing a black oval and a red vert slammed with Porsche Alloys.

For shops in the Delta Area, there was Europeon Auto (Vic) that painted many of the cars-Cal-Look Stuff and did performance engines.  Not to mention, Ed at the Bug Shop, and Corey Dahl who used to own a real clean Black Oval, that was a drag car (Now Corey runs a shop in Port Kells, but does not work on VW's anymore.

I remember when Cal Imports was in a lane next to a Performance Engineering Shop in New Westminster when Steve Stanbridge had the Race Car(dark blue) before it turned into Weird Science, and I remember the cal-look 63 sunroof i think-that had 73 fenders on it.

Darren K (Kroc) worked there, along with Clarence.
Cal Imports later moved into a new location, behind A&W off of Kingsway, Lanny used to work there behind the counter, with a guy with long hair (Jim) anyone remember.  Also Greg who I think was the Manager there.

I remember Darren K had a cool black cal-look bug with alloys that I think was sold to Steve's dad.  Thunderbugs did a show and shine in central park-burnaby, where i remember Fritz the car! it was red with a big mill in there.  Also, Markus had a green late model with a big mill too.
Not to mention Rene and Carol Lord, orange Late Model, and van, Roy, Rudy (Fast Rabbit)
This is going a long way back, also , Walt Kaiser Jr's Blue Notch that I detailed for him.
Mark Wisheart 59 and then Dwayne's old 79 Vert lowered!

Hans K-you remember Reese, Mike Walz, Brett Walker and his toys.  I also remember Randy Gadios(not sure of the spelling that had a real clean two-toned bus!

In HansK garage, was my old oval in primer who once belonged to Greg H-later sold to Mike Gordon.  This car was in Primer with Painted Fenderwalls.  The pan was sold to Paul Jones that he used for his drag chopped beetle (X-Mike Hornak's Car)

Going to the Thunderbugs meetings off of Kingsway were great , and also meeting Marty,Mike Grocott, Lawerence Ming, Jeff Boylan (who painted my low 69-peach/piink were great people.
Not to mention Shane Marriot.

Flossin, yes I do remember your Ghia, as well as the vert-before it became a magazine car, do you ever see Kelly? or Jason? or Ted)-Remember Bigsbys off of Commercial Drive-you were always in the Sandblasting booth!

And yes, there was Mike Gordon's shop in Langley, the fondest memories are when his dad opened up his house to have a show and shine there in the driveway!  Brian-you remember that!

I remember all the VW's that Mike and Marty and Brian had.
Brian, ever remember the drag car that we bought together?

Lawerence, Brian, Jeff, Rob Sterk (who owned Jeff's green car) Stephan, On-Zoom (Chris)-the guy that had a grey notch. I found him once on www.vwdov.ca.  Dwayne Farmer, Rob Algard, Pierce Owen, Ken Smith,Mike Hornak were all part of the V-Dub thing-Remember going cruisin in White Rock or down to bellingham etc-all good times!!

I could ramble on but, I will come to a close.  I will see if I can dig up some old pics.
Post some more stories like this

Back then, that was my engine.  Exactly.  My car was a 69 so it weighed a couple of hundred pounds more (at most).  And I had taller gears.  My car ran 16.9s.  Without seeing a timeslip, I don't believe it.

To go 14.1, your trap speed is around 94 mph.  If the car weighed 1650 with him in it (how much did he weigh?), he'd have to make 110-120hp.  No way with that motor.

Bruce, its true. It was a 55 oval totally gutted inside and he was not a heavy guy either. I dont think he sold the motor with the car so I dont know where it ended up.

Actually I remember lawrence driving his 55 oval onto the truck scales by the port mann bridge and it weighed under 1200 lbs , no interior only front seats no bumpers , one piece windows , it all adds up to weight reduction , Lawrence weighed 145 lbs soaking wet and he was a good driver and like I stated earlier it may have been 15.10s he ran but I thought it was 14.10s anyways the car was light and I think considering what he had under the rear deck lid it was a quick car , very impressive for a budget mill , so impressive it was the reason I started this post .
