Beetleball sightings!
« on: July 27, 2008, 01:36:01 AM »
I was driving along Kingsway in Van and Gulf colours caught my eye at the 2400 Motel.  Parked in there were 3 multi coloured Beetles, so I did a quick U-turn to check them out.  They were the partisipants in the Beetleball car rally that starts off here in Vancouver and ends in Ensenada Mexico.

They are starting off on Monday morning well before rush hour, so they've got nothing planned for Sunday.  They asked me to send out an invitation to any and all VWs to gather at their Motel around 3 O'Clock.
Who's in?  Silas?  Geevey?

That's pretty cool! Never heard of it before. We had a blast driving a '75 Westy down the Baja when I was a much younger individual. Would like to do it again someday but with my family this time, and not specifically in a '75 ;).

i just got a message on my machine from jimbo (beetleball organizer) with the results to the inaugural beetleball 2008!!!!

1st place - gt40 - 21:15:00
2nd place - herbie - 23:06:00
3rd place - evil knievel - 23:06:10
4th place - mexitaxi - 26:10:00
5th place - stock 65 - 32:05:00

i'm pretty sure that the stock 65 was the only car in it's class and the other 4 cars were in the "open" class.

[Hi , Juan from team Herbie here!,  I just found this site, and wanted to thank all of the Vancouver locals for coming out and seeing us off.   These guys are a class act, and am looking forward to seeing them again next year.   As the Mexitaxi  team said, It was a lot of fun, no matter what.   At the end, we all had stories to share, and all of us finished under the 33 hours.  The competition between everyone was very friendly, more like comrades doing battle with the obstacles.  We all exchanged cell #s, and kept in touch during the "rally".  It was the most fun (at least that I can talk about)  I have  had in a while, and a great vacation besides.  We are planning to run the Long Beach to Vegas Beetleball, and  so is at least one other team from Chico. Hope more will make this one,  And plan on attending  next years Vancouver  to  Ensenada BEETLEBALL.  Jim and Lorena did a great job of setting up this race, with rallybooks that listed time and distance coordinates, as well as EVERY Highway Patrol , local police, and weigh station. Thanks,  We are looking forward to the next one!

Hey Juan, good to see you found this site!
Did any of you experience the "spray" while following Nick?

Hi Bruce!,  Nah, he was too far ahead of us,  must have vaporizied.  We did pass Evil on the grapevine, went up at 65 to 70 in 4th, and down at 80 to 85.  We had to stop for gas at Gorman though, and they passed us up. We had the only stock (9 1/2 gallon) fuel tank.  We caught them again at the first toll booth in Tijuana, and then it was back and forth all the way (75 miles) to Ensenada.  It wasn't about who had the most HP or who was the best driver at that point.  It was about who was willing to chance speeding in Mexico at 2:00 in the morning, with posted speed limits of 60 kilometers per hour. We were both doing 60 to 70 mph and pulled into the Bahia hotel at the same time. Nick had arrived so far ahead of us, that he was already asleep!  I expect you to give him a run for his money next year!  I hope Jim and Lorena plan next years Beetleball24 to start after the great Canadian. I saw the pics you guys took of the event and I don't want to miss it.  Juan
