Local VW Scene??
« on: June 22, 2008, 09:12:47 PM »
I am not sure if it's just me, but is the local AC VW scene fading away? Starting with this sites it seems like the amount of posts are way down, it used to be much more lively. Many of the regular contributors are rarely seen on this site anymore. I know life priorities change over time and I have seen other come and go, but this time it seems like an extraordinary amount of people have sold their cars and left the scene all at once. Furthermore, it appears as if the only local vw club is dismantling. It just my observation and I hope I am wrong because this is a great site and I have met some awesome people through it.

you may have a point.

Yes it is true that life is going on and everyone has s#% happening to them.

It has always gone in waves. Some people are real fans but can't afford to go crazy and some just come and go.

I will think in a couple of years it will come back with greater numbers.

it's the ebb & flow my friend.

personally, i think the local scene is fine. look at the 2 most recent local builds (joe & russ...both outstanding cars) and the canadian representation at the mother of all vw shows (not only the cars, but the people that flew or drove down to attend...most notably ken king & trevor p for driving kens bitchin 23 winda deluxe all the way from alberta to cali & back...hardcore!!!). check out pics of steveos dads ghia, josh's oval, brassmonkeys buggy, kirin's building his car, i'm sure lanny's busy.....plus those local guys that were on the boob tube building some hippie bus for some surfer dude.

i know some cars that have been sold over the last year but also know alot of cars that have been bought.

cip is still open. avr has hoped onboard as an asf sponsor and local shop that's into the scene. big corporate sponsorship for the great canadian again this year.

i dont know what's up with the dglvk...but chris says they're just changing direction. that's cool. new directions can be exciting. and there are other local vw clubs (dvkk, bullyboys, vvwc)....

as far as posts on the site go....i personally dont post as much as i used to because time just wont allow it....but i have noticed that the site is still gathering new members daily anf we are getting awfully close to 100,000 posts.

overall...i think things are ok...and with the weather turning it'll only get better.

time to cruise baby!!!! 8)

I think its just nature of the beast. A lot of us are getting older(As sad and scary as that might be) and just get busy with life. Unfortunatly there is a lot more to life then just cars! However it is true though that more cars are coming out of the wood work... Just give it time...

Some of us keep coming back to the scene also.
My first bug was a 59 in the late 60's.
My second a 74 in the 80's and now a 70.  :)

Even though I moved away from the lower mainland 5 years ago, I am still a VW aholic....the only problem for me is that our work is so demanding,  I hardly get a chance to work on my car and get it out.  2 weeks ago was the first time I got my car out to drive in almost 2 years.  There is Todd, Marty and I in the shuswap VW aholics club, but we are 5 hours away from you guys down there.

I'm up to getting something new running.. just don't want to deal with the politics. Maybe work it so that more of the 'out of towners' can be involved.

I'm involved with other vintage vehicle associations... they are truely interested in maintaining the integrity of their vehicle and making sure that everyone involved shares the devotion and is invited (and expected) to invest time. I do notice the difference with others auto communities.. where most are an older generation.
I've had my kids.. past the baby stage.. and now am starting to live 'dublife' the way it's meant to be lived.

 I love VW..
Live it.. and love it.  EVERYDAY.  I've been devoted to the dub since 96.. don't plan on leaving her.

There 'hardcore' dubbers out there.. and there are enthusiasts. Maybe we just need to find a medium (similar to the Airspeed community) where we can come together.

Maybe start a vw tattoo club on the side.. haha

A group where we can come together for cruises, advice, helping hands... Volkswagen Support Group..lol

I bought my first bug, a rusty 65 flat black sedan with centerlines, back in about 92. Sold it in 93 or 94 to a guy who was going to build it into a racecar. My next one, a green 59 ragtop was bought shortly after, and sold to a girl in white rock around 97. Was out of the scene til 2006 when I bought my current 64 convertible. During all those years I did not miss one GCVW show and even made a few shows in the states. Basically my interest in air cooled VW's never left although I didn't own one for a while. Now I'm finally back in it and my car is finally on the road and I have no plans of ever being VWless again.

Here's a shot of my old 59.

Hardcore since 84  :DSometimes the priority changes but the passion is always there I've been in and out of focus a few times but as the kids get older the van gets more time .I'll never be without one ever again . I think you will see more mixed clubs and shows and car owners get smaller . It is also not a cheap hobbie and the newer generation Enjoy the modern ammenities with some bolt on goodies . Even the Street rodding generation is changing and going back to low buck affordable rides focusing more on friends and commen intrests . I always feel as part of a community and vw owners ALWAYS wave  8)
See! you around alot longer Outkast AKA Martin

Very young and nice mullet at eighteen second VW

Its always been in waves I think, My Uncle les is in the middle of his type 34 rebuild and my old man's 71 ghia is right there as well, were also painting uncles 56 oval and working on my buddy dave's new bus, I have seen tons of poeple in Maple Ridge buying bugs and buses more than I have in years, I think the scene is going well, just the "post whores" are not posting so much here.

Im waiting on phil to finish that 58 beetle that I have all the parts for still!  :D

Im loving the life, Vw's are going strong!................Better this that a Lada club.

Over the last 30 plus years there have been many times where I personally thought it was all over only to find out later
there was much more going on than I could ever imagine.  These days the kids control this computer.....and the disposable income so....
