OMG Geoff, I remember it well.  In fact it got me thinking that there was a VW version of it.  Well I found one on EBAY..... Check this out:

Never had that. I always bought the model cars on sale for pennies when they were changing stock. Then, when they were put together I'd blow them up with home made fire crackers ;D. I had a local patent in the neighborhood for the biggest fire cracker :D. I was about 11 at the time.

i remember those .. my friend had that toy and i stole it from him..lol .... i also had the one's where the panels on the cars would flip to the damaged side when you hit them and then you would flip them back to the fixed side.

i still have my sets,the first set is with the 57 ford and 57 chevy wagon and the other is with the beetle and dodge pickup ,still have the boxes,ramps ext.............. lots of fun when i was a kid ! ;D

I totally had the smash up cars.. I've gotten the odd car here and there also, in the boys carstash someplace.
 It was that and buzz cut and tatoo'd barbies  ;)
