I'm in the market for a new computer, where is the best place to buy from? a bigbox store like bestbuy or Costco or a smaller specialty shop? any recommendations?

Find someone to build you one. The hardest thing will be to choose from Linux, MSW XP or that new Vista stuff.

For a run-of-the mill, all around everyday computer, Best Buy has some deals that are tough to beat, but if you want a computer designed to do specific things (like say, record music or edit movies) you can basically have one custom-built by places such as NCIX. That way you can skip the applications and functions you don't need and put your money towards better components.
Like Chris says, it comes down to budget and intended use.

I'm cheap like Borscht, run of the mill for me. I was thinking an IMac at one point for the lack of viruses.

people i've talked to were happy with london drugs..i went there and i'd certainly go back again...i use a mac and like it fine...mike(the computer illiterate)

I've been using a Mac for the last 5 years. I'll never go back to the dark side :ph34r: . They are a bit more expensive if all you need is a very basic computer. But, if you want to compare apples to apples................. If you build a PC to accomplish the same tasks as a Mac, you'll pay the same if not more for the PC. I have a Macbook Pro (laptop) right now and absolutely love it. I use it mainly for my photography, photo storage and editing. It's a very durable machine, it has gone to Scotland and many places in the US with me when I travel.

When it comes to MAC's you should talk to Shane about his, its got another problem now.

Talking to some friends that do desktop repair for a living, they have yet to deal with a virus issue on Vista.

I would suggest staying away from a laptop unless you plan to use it on the road, they are designed for a specific type of use not for the home user that plants it on a desk and leaves it there. Its a waste and your going to pay more for upgrades and parts.

Buy yourself a brand name box with a decent warranty, your not really a power user, you dont need a kick ass computer, you dont need Unix/Linux.

Desktop computers are cheap, the parts are cheap, I could build you a box cheap and you'd be on your way.

If you want a brand name, I will say go with HP and get an Intel based system.

Vista is not a bad way to go, with the right computer it prevents you from screwing stuff up, it stops viruses and spyware and it comes with pretty much everything you need.

Regardless of Mac or PC, hardware is not immune to failure.

With a PC there are so many people familiar with hardware and software that theres no need to visit a repair shop.

PC:

Need a power supply? sure 60 bucks can give you a quiet fan PS and swap it in 5-10 minutes
Hardrive hardware failure or extra storage needed? 98 bucks can give you western digital 500GB or 150bucks for 750GB. Swap in 5minutes
faster vid card with more memory??? take 5 minutes to swap and anothe couple for drivers.

Even XP pro's NTFS system is relatively stable. You can norton ghost 12 your hardrive so you can have an identical copy of your current hardrive so if 1 hardrive crashes you can be back up in a matter of switching a cable. VISTA at this moment to my knowledge doesn't allow identical cloning of a hardrive.

I'm not against mac. I just know that if I ever have issues with my home desktop I can fix it by myself in a matter of 1 trip to NCIX. Not a penny to a technician. I dont think you can say the same for a Mac user since parts are more proprietary. When macs have issues dont hesitate to get a mac tech to charge you every minute he/she works on it.

Expect to pay at least 25% more for a mac with the same power as a windows machine, unless you want to say \"screw Bill Gates\" I'll pay the extra money, Oh, it still goes to Bill Gates?\" Maybe they don't write viruses for macs because not as many people own them? The PC's I've had have been fine, and are more easily upgraded with off the shelf parts if needed, plus there are millions of developers writing for PC over Mac. Not that Mac is bad, but sometimes you get what you pay for isn't true... IMO
