You just answered your own question.

They are like 'caps' behind the glass part of an eggshell taillight (they fit into each other then into the glass part).

Chrome bezel + clip complete the picture.

thanks ehos. i'm aware of how they fit and what parts i need to complete the tail light assembly.

i guess my question is why? these two are the first i've ever seen, and i have seen my fair share of snowflake tail lights and assemblies.

it seems like a pair of these would make the tail light even darker than it allready is and harder to see. not too safe or usefull if you ask me.

so, why would anyone run these? does anyone w/ snowflake tail lights have them? how rare are these things and what are they worth?

thanks again ehos. anyone else have any thoughts?

They're not 'rare', they're 'supposed' to be on every taillight (eggshell).

The reason they're there:

1) Because if they weren't the glass would be too light.  Any sunlight/light source hitting the glass would seem like they're 'on'.
2) They provide the little bit of 'tint' to set them apart from (1) above and when it's bulb is activated.
3) Because it came from VW like that.
4) Because VW engineers knew what they were doing.

allright, i posted this on thesamba.com aswell and got some interesting feedback.

these are plastic \"difuser\" lenses commonly fit on snowflake tail lights from '56 - '61. like ehos said, to difuse natural light (sun light) from making it look like the signal is \"on\".

eggshell tail lights are a darker convex shaped glass that fit in '55 ovals, one year only.
