Sptitscreen Van Model Code For Insurance?
« on: December 22, 2007, 05:13:40 PM »
Just been to renew the insurance on my split panel van and noticed they had it down as a 4DR station wagen, which it obviously isnt. i know the vins etc are all correct as i can trace the history. the lady said no problem to change it to what it actually is...an hour later and after seemingly going through every list on the computer there seemed to be very little as regards models for type 2,s, couldnt even find later bay stuff.
So im asking any type 2 ownersespecially splitscreen, could you have a look on your ins docs to see what the model code is for your van, just so i can go back to the ins place and tell her a reference point to startlookig??

thanks in advance

Dott

Dott, the body style isn't that important.  It does not affect your rates.

Back in the 60s, there were no other mini-vans, so VW marketed the Type 2 as a station wagon.  That is why yours is listed as it is.

If you want to change it, have them look up the body style of a newer Ford Windstar or Toyota Sienna and use that.

If it 's a panel, does it have a window in the cargo doors? And a seat in the back? If so it can be licenced as a  4 door station wagon (that's what mine is licenced as). If not You have to licence it as a commercial van, which is more expensive, as it goes on the GVW, rather than the empty weight. There is no special designation for \"split window van\"

To change it to a motor home means you have to have a bed inside, and I think at least two other things, but you can choose from a list, ie a sink with pump or faucet, a cooking stove, a heater, a toilet, etc. After you install the two things you have to drive it over the scales, but the insurance is way cheaper. I converted a 67 Dodge schoolbus about 5 years ago, and the plate ended up costing the same as a small car.

Mine have all been four door station wagens (I have owned a lot) so your designation is what it should be. I did also have 1 westy that was registered as a motorhome.

You have to have at least one window in the cargo doors, and a seat in the back to call it a station wagon, otherwise you have to register it as a commercial vehicle. Been down this road a few times. Worth getting it right in case you ever get in an accident.
