Clutch Issue
« on: September 11, 2007, 12:50:27 AM »
hey guys, well i spent all night till now placing the clutch in my car and popping the motor back in, It is super hard to adjust the clutch, i cant adjust the wingnut at all and i tried pryign the whole armature off of the shaft but it wont budge.. is there any secrect or tricks to adjusting the clutch, It is really really stiff, I can drive the car but it does have quite a bit of vibration (chatter) when downshifting or letting out the clutch, does this have anything to do with it being out of adjustment? any replies greatly appreciated... im sooooo frustrated.

does your trans have a guide tube over the input shaft that the throw out bearing rides on?
and does your throw out bearing have a flat thrust surface? or a rounded surface?

the only way i find to adjust the clutch to any degree
is to use needle nose vice grips on the cable NOT the cable part but
where the cable meets the metal end that has threads on it
turn the cable clock wise with the vise grips while holding the adjuster maybe half a turn
and then turn the cable back while turning the adjuster and turn the cable again and again and again
until you have about 3/4 of an inch at the pedal
it can be really tough to do I know
also maybe lube it up with something
penetrating oil, wd 40,etc
as far as i know the pressure plate and throw out bearing
should not have surfaces that match
meaning if your throw out bearing has a spinning surface then your pressure plate should not
don't quote me but ......i think

hey guys thanks for the replies...  I ended up cuttign the old cable and i had oen layign around the garage... wich is crazy. Anyways, i put the new one in and adjusted it. It seems to be workoign pretty good, and the clutch chatter is barely noticable now, maybe it needs to break in so I'll just take it easy and see what happens.

penetrating oil, wd 40,etc
as an aside, i've personally found wd40 to be an inferior product compared to \"real\" penetrating fluids like liquid wrench, pb blaster or nut buster.

wd is good for water displacement and to use as a cheap flame thrower. nothing more...nothing less.;)
