Guys I need recommendations on taking an oval down to bare metal. Do I sandblast, grind or .... What type of abrasive... sand, walnut shells, glass beads. What have you used and had positive experience with. Please only comment if you have actual experience. Who would you recommend.

i took my oval to airstrip in richmond. they were recommended to me by a friend and they were very helpfull. gerry (i'm pretty sure that's his name, it was awhile ago) was the guy in charge.

they first went at it with walnut shells to remove paint, filler and surface rust and then hit it with sand to clean up the more troubled rust areas and also apparently the sand blasting provides the metal with a good \"tooth\" so primer and filler will take to it better. i highly recommend getting it primered asap after blasting so the metal is protected.

after the blasting...

after epoxy primer....

Gavin used B&W in Coquitlam and had good success.  They sandblasted his split.

One potential problem with sandblasting is warpage.  If the guy doing the blasting concentrates the blast in one area too long, heat buildup causes warpage.  It is more prevelant on flat panels than curved.  Gavin's car had been blasted in the past by a PO and the doors were warped beyond hope.  My cure to this will be to use paint stripper on the large flat areas like the doors and rear quarter panels.  If those areas are mostly bare steel, the guy blasting them won't have to spend a lot of time, so there will be less chance of warpage.

Good point. A good razor blade on a holder works great for getting old finish off. Get off as much as you can before sending stuff like doors, hoods, roof, etc in for blasting.

Randy at B & W is a nice guy. Very personalble. That's where I get my blasting done. He's the new owner but the blasting guy is the same dude. I think Lanny has used them as well.

Gavin's outa town so I sent him a message asking.  Here's his reply:

\"I think Steve charged me 700, that included all pieces. He walnut blasted doors
and did not blast center sections of doors and I did not want to risk it. I
chemically stripped there.\"

Silas, cuanto coste?

Russ, did Panel Craft use sand to blast your car?  How much was yours, with the priming?

FAK, thats not to bad at all, My scirocco is going to be around $1500 at airstrip. I have used them before and they are great, a beelte will be cheaper as its body on frame, with the scirocco they have to do the floors, and the underside. $700 would be nice =).

i cant recall the exact amount, but i believe it was around $700-ish for a bare shell (off the pan with no doors, hood, or decklid), a hood, 2 rear crossmember/rear wheel wells/parcel shelf off a parts car, and a pair of aftermarket heater channels....

this was a few years ago, so like everything else (except my wage ;) ) the $$ has probably gone up.

Hey Silas, do you know what brand those heater channels are?
those are your generic aftermarket econo style heater channels without heater tubes.

i decided to go with the econo style because the shape is a closer match to the original channels (the curvature of the deluxe channels w/ heater tubes is a bit different) and also i'm not concerned about heat as the car will be a fair weather cruiser.

het ahold of shane & chris at http://www.acvw.net for these parts. they should be able to help you out.
