Stupidest Thing You Have Done Working On Your Vw
« on: February 10, 2004, 10:47:05 PM »
Left the battery hooked up while doing electrical stuff.
Had my nephew pump the brakes while checking for leaks.(Just about broke my nose on that one)

Trying to remove wiper arm nylon bushings with a hunting knife(Got the scars on my left middle finger and pointer.. should of gotten stitches)
gotten stuck underneath my bug as the suspension settled.
drained a fuel tank with no catch near me..
If more power is better. Then too much is just enough.
Why do it once when you can do it thrice?

i was welding a patch on the front wheel well and some interior carpet caught fire, which was fine but I went to put it out and the doors were locked   I got lucky and had the keys not to far away, I needed a new carpet kit though.

bleeding the brakes, and the rear brake line was kinked.  I had no idea why I was loosing so much brake fluid!

the rear pan half was soaked in brake fluid, and I needed new carpet.

This wasn't really my fault but....

We hooked up an gas can to the fuel pump of a beater 74 Beetle to see if she would go. We just put a piece of fuel line from the take on to the input of the fuel pump. We then took her for a little test drive around the farm. I was driving along when the engine suddenly lost power and the whole rear of the beetle, gas can and all was on fire.

Once we put out the fire we found out what caused the accident, one of us (not me), had not blocked of the fuel line from the front when we disconnected it from the pump. Fuel dripped all over the engine until the inevitable happened and the thing burst into flames. The fire was hot enough to melt the carb in several places, but the engine and most of its bits were fine, as it now runs in a bus and has been haulin' for a little less than a year since the fire.

That taught me a thing or two about safety with gas   .

when i was 15,i bought a new pair of vaurnet sunglasses, took them off,(about 30 mins old)checked the oil, forgot about them, backed up and ran them over.100 bucks down the drain.a buddy of mine bought a 67 baja when we were 16,towed it home, fired it up,went balls out up the driveway, hit the brakes, only the front worked, slid into his garage, into the furnace, wrecked the furnace and the glass nose on the car!! :o it was an exspensive learning experience to say the least

Ahh yes this is the fun stuff, 1967 blue beetle needs floors, just bought car..
went to california imports......walked up to kris kahle bought floors rockers corners ect.....
went home striped bug welded floors, frame head, rockers just gave hell and finished up.
once car was completed.........opened glove box \"oh look receipts\" yaayayayay
lets see here 1967 beetle. okay, mechanics recomendation that floors should not be replaced
due to subframe extremly twisted, followed by frame head twisted and door jam and ds door incorrect
\"okay, lets look at the door, never really looked there yet, kinda got ahead of myself, oh yea look thats a 68 door.......hey look a that piller its totally destroyed.......great move moron only cost 500 in parts
that is about the most stupid thing ive done, not to bad eh!(i was 17 knew everything......aparently not)
from now on i know nothing. it is far easier

How about one when I was a new (to me) VW owner. Learning that a ACVW motor WILL overheat no matter how cold it is! We broke a belt on a 25 deg F day so I said  \" it's so cold there's NO WAY we'll overheat\".  Blew the #3 plug completely out of the head!!

John that reminds me when I was about 16, not driving a VW but a V8 with a broken waterpump,,,,I figured the faster I drove the cooler the engine would get,,,that worked for about 1 mile!
