Stripping Chrome?
« on: June 04, 2007, 03:30:01 PM »
I have a set of hubcaps in pretty poor shape i would say, a little surface rust in areas, and some dents here and there. Im doing something with my steelies and i would like to use the caps. Now i want to get rid of the chrome, these will not be show pieces.

Can i sand blast it off ? or is there a chemical stripper i can use ? Wire wheel?

One way to get it off is to take it to a chrome shop and have them reverse the process.

ofcourse, im just looking to paint them flat black and do some pin striping, which is just temporary, besides the hub caps are beat.

I just need to get them to a state where i can paint them.

Would it be ok to just tremclad over the chrome? will it stick ?

Sandblasting kinda works for the short time, try some scotch brite or 180 sandpaper.

Nothing other than dechroming will stay stuck forever.

De-chroming is very cheap since there is almost no labour involved.

The problem with trying to sand the chrome off is that chrome is harder than the abrasives used on sandpaper.
