There never were any Diesel's brought into N/A. There were Diesel Vanagons in 82/83 only but they are horridly slow 1.6L Non Turbo. Your best bet is to have one imported from germany, if your interested i may be bringing one in. My dad just bought a couple Land Rover Defender Diesels there and we have 1 more spot in the container.

Here is why I WOULD buy a Vanagon

 :D

I'd be interested in the speed at which that double cab was run into the wall and / or cargo load.....

And judging from the height of it , seemed to be loaded with something heavy.  Who knows , maybe it's all a computer generated fake.

Thanks for the interesting video and picture. However, I am still hooked on getting a local a double cab. I know there are some out there. I actually have a lead on a 1985 DC (gas). I wouldn't mind hearing from those of you that have one or  had one in the past. Any good advice?

Although I really want a diesel DC, which as Aircooledrules indicated are hard to find in NA.  I may have to go with a gutless 1.6L Passeneger Vanagon diesel.

Thanks.

Hey Hans
Im going with the 2.5...127hp as soon as the truck comes out of the body shop...Go westy

The guy i bought my syncro from towed it to my house with a vanagon with a 1.6 diesel and boy was that engine working hard....had to stop a few times to cool it down from Vancouver to New West...Not far.
Might want to go for a 1.9 TDI...Seems to be big in Europe..Lots of power and decent milage

My offer still stands for 72vwtype2 to find one,Kinda a specific request.mabey a tall order hope he is willing to wait a while to get that.

let me know...J

Do you mean the solder in resistor between pin 2 and 3 on the potiometer or a harness update?
To correct Vanagon syndrome? Is that what your asking?

The 1.9L TDi swap is definetly a great one but its expensive. The direct injection diesel motors cost alot of money. Your best bet for a swap would be a subaru 2.5, the 2.2 is also an option but the 2.5L is just as cheap and offers plenty of power, also you get to keep the boxer configuration.

Other popular swaps are the 2.0L ABA (vw 8v, not really worth it, 115hp)
Porsche 911 6cyl motors with G50 transmission if you have deep pockets
also alot of guys have been stuffing in VR motors but again, not really worth it and not much information available on the swaps.

No ,I read once that they were testing a hot wire type MAF meter to replace the stock flap airflow meter for even more power and because stock ones are hard to get.

imo  motor conversions suck

Ive looked at most of the options that you have mentioned, the big thing for me is to stay with the waterboxer engine..Ive considered the 1.9 tdi but i am am original equiptment nut.... I want the best of both worlds ...original look and more power thats why ive decided the go westy waterboxer.

Shawn...My wife and i will be hanging out with the Dilleys the entire weekend, track ,breakfast and show...or untill Darren gets sick of us! To answer your work question Im a mechanic..I work on everything from a snowmobile up to a Cat 966 loader...Mainley ford trucks...they break down alot so buisness is good! ...J

Thanks for all the info VW 144th (Jason).

I am with you on the stock equiment. I'm not into making huge modifications, like switching from gas to diesel. I have just started looking into getting one, so I'm in no rush. I realize getting a diesel DC is a tall order, but not imposssible. If I haven't found one by August I will keep your offer, for advice, in mind.

Thanks, Phil.
