I talked to him today after seeing it coming back from the point. This car is an original two tone rag from cali, apparently it was restored 12 yrs ago, the owner has owned it for 5.5 yrs and used it as a daily driver up until recently. It has a 1641, everything works and is in good shape. The rear pan was replaced by him, I guess the battery tray. It had collector plates on it but he changed the exhaust and could no longer have them. He says its in good shape with the usual minor rust in the fenders, needs tires and a new top. Asking $7400. I think he's asking about $4000 plus too much for the car. There is alot more needed than he says there is. Looks good from afar but far from good.

i agree with all that you have to say except that there is no such thing as an original 2-tone ragtop.

this car needs the big ticket item....heater channels. he'll be sitting on it for awhile if he's stuck on getting anywhere close to $7400.

I guess we'll all be watching this car deteriorate into nothing for the asking price of $7400......... or do you think there is treasure buried in there?

If a portion of the channel is rusty, I believe there is way more to be found. If the channels need to be done, how about the wheel wells, and who know what else is there to be found. The moment you start the work on the channels, you find a whole bunch of stuff that needs fabricating or replacing.

My 66 had one bad channel and I purchase both from Airspeed because if one is gone, the other one can't be that much different.

The way I see it, the engine is worth 400-500 and the rest of the car can be worth between 500 and 2000 and that is in my opinion a far cry from 7400.

My two cents

Your right the car needs alot. I was just thinking maybe he's got a couple of gold bars in the trunk that he's selling with the car. Thats the reason for such a high asking price. ;)

I think he will get somewhere between the asking price and what we determine the value to be... Why may you ask? Its an original ragtop, it looks pretty decent and its in Vancouver and its no a common car to see around here. Yes he may sit on it for a while.. but it will sell just watch.

I am bored so here goes it:

I do believe that there is a sucker born every minute and every body may play the fool sometime. I have been there/ done that. However, with  $7400 maracas anyone can make the trip to The VW classic festivities and buy much more car for the money and land it in BC.

Assuming (make an ass out you and me) you do not find any surprises, if you can do the work your self, the price will be $7400 plus 100 or 200 hrs of work and $500 plus in parts and supplies. If you do not do the work that is required, you have to pay for it and you know how expensive that could be. I would extimate between $2600 and $3500.  That will make the price Between 10K and 11K.

What the heck since we are speculating as to what it will sell for my figure will be between 2500 (what I think is worth) and 3900 (price minus extimated work needed.)

My thought is.. Someone will walk in from seeing that car on the street. Probably a none web savvy enthusiast will throw the lootcakes at it. Theres a lot to be said about location. That being said I have seen a few people try to sell really rusty beetles for good money. However the truth is that these cars are not that common anymore. When split beetles that are completly restored are selling for 40K+ in the states a rusty 60's one needing restoration in the 1,000's seems like a good deal right?

When I get home from my vacation I'll make the trek out to twasassen to have a gander.

a fully restored split and a troubled early 60's ragtop are two completely different birds.

you'd need to compare another early 60's ragtop to this one to help determine it's true worth.
