Out Of Province Inspections
« on: May 12, 2007, 10:47:40 AM »
Heres a question for ya:
What shop do you guys/gals use to get an out of province bug inspected and pass for ICBC insurance? I know I can use Canadian Tire but are they gonna be any easier/nit-picky than any other shop? I think the going rate for an inspection is around $100. Any ideas or info would be greatly appreciated. I wanna get this thing on the road with more than just bloody-expensive temp. insurance.
Thanks!

i'd probably go with a smaller shop than crappy tire, chances are better they'd be less by the book.

it was a few years ago, but Dale at OK Tire in Surrey (on 104th by King George Hwy IIRC) was really good to Lora on her VI for the '58 bus. he wasn't overly picky, let a few things slide and sported one helluva sweet mullet.  :mullet:

but i'm sure some folk around here can chime in on other VW-friendly shops around too.
Sometimes I get the feeling the whole world is against me, but deep down I know that's not true. Some smaller countries are neutral.

canadian tire is not even an option.

the shop i work at on saturdays does inspections. under $100 and reasonable. he has a business to run and an inspection license to uphold so he's not going to pass junk, but he is fair. i got my 64 passed there and i have seen and been apart of many vehicle inspections that have been passed there.

the owner is also very well versed in vw's.

frankie wong @ autobahn, 1721 main street, vancouver bc, 604-873-3858.

if you decide to go this route tell him silas sent you.

All the news on TV is not helpful in these matters.  The whole exercise is intended to keep the cars safe and in good working order. That means that your lights, steering, suspension, horn, tires, spare tire, brakes, e-brake, windshield, seat belts, etc. should be in working order.

They showed (on the news) a van that looked like it had an old repair weld snapped after rusting out. Chances are, if a hundred inspectors had inspected it would likely passed if that weld was not noted. Now the inspection sites are going to be under pressure to cover their asses.

the flip side of that is that the owner of the vehicle needs to be held responsible for half-ass modifications done after the vehicle was saftied.

Hey this is all great info....thanks a lot guys! This gives me some options anyways. Definantly would like a shop that will inspect the major \"safety\" issues, obviously for me and my passenger's safety as well as fellow drivers on the road, but not fail the car for something small and insignificant just because the inspector has something to \"prove\". Anyhow, hopefully in the next week or two I'll be able to get the sucker into a shop and be driving it full-time instead of a week-per-year on temp insurance like the past few years....dang Alberta registration!!  ^_^

I had my Volvo inspected and most of the stuff was standard. One thing that bothered me was they made me get seat covers because my driver seat had a 1/2\" cut on the leather. Also I had to purchase a new light because the outside plastic cover to the head left head light had a small crack from a rock during winter driving. The winshield also was shipped from winter driving and was required to be replaced.
