apparantly i need the new car to fail aircare before i can even get 3 months of insurance, now i was wonding if there are any little tricks i can do between now and when aircare opens in the morning that might up the chances of it passing

set idle high.. I got away with 1500 rpm before.

idle mixture screw all the way to bottom and then 1  turn out.

Retard timing to 12 degrees after top dead center.

Runs like crap, no power... but worked and passed.

 All the other times I went to Duanes and he played with it on his gas analyzer.

here's what i did before i took my 64 w/ 1600dp through....

adjusted valves, adjusted points, changed the plugs, changed the oil, adjusted the carb, filled gas tank 1/2 full, put some wynns fuel additive in the tank, took it for a nice 20 minute hard drive on sw marine drive, pulled over & revved the motor while spraying carb cleaner down the throat of the carb, went for another hard drive for 15 minutes, never turned the car off while i waited in line....and passed w/ some pretty good numbers (allthough i was above average on idle co).

im not to sad if it fails, got 3 months after that to change the jets up and stuff, or swap in a different motor lol

ill just take it for a good drive, put in some fuel additive and play with the idle a bit see how it does.

No real tricks to aircare. Just remember that you can have the carbs adjusted and by the time you get to aircare the readings can change.

I've played with adjusting screws and they look great on the analyser. Take the car for a spin around the block and the readings change sometimes minimally and somtimes alot when I get back to the 4 gas analyser. Working on cars like that really push your patience level. Do the same carb adjustments on a v8 or v6 and typically the adjustments are very consistant in the shop and at the aircare facility.

Even with non leaking intake manifold gaskets, tight throttle shafts etc etc the readings always change.

For Dual carbs, backing the timing and bumping up the idle works well. BUT by turning the idle adjustment screws sometimes varies the idle depending on engine temperatures.  Try to stick around 1150rpm.

The CO readings for our acvw's is brutally rich. I guess its a good thing to pass. The HC are more difficult to pass than the CO department.

For the sewer pipe big mufflers the \"sample of dilution\" seems to be a chronic problem. Negative reversion from the cam seems to suck fresh air into the tailpipe.  This increases o2 levels.  So the test  results can can vary due to the fudge factor the air care analyser will put on the test sheet.

It is very real to see a car that passes one lane and I bet if they went around the block and get retested the resuts can be significantly different and a good possibility of failure. I see this all the time on a 4 gas analyser even with solid fresh stocker engines. Water cooled vehicles just have better stabilized engine temps.

retarding the timing is a tad more solid emission reduction method. Even with a hotter running engine the NOX seems to always pass and NEVER an issue.

well she didnt do to bad, only thing that failed without me doing any adjustments was the idle CO levels, 5.67 and allowed is 5.41

thank god, i thought it was just me.

we just got a handheld snap-on scan gas 4 gas analyzer at work and it is a great tool. allthough our #'s and aircare #'s do seem to fluctuate a bit.

I think Pierced may have been refering to me . If all else FAILS , I have an aircare motor one could borrow to get their car through! 1641 dp professional set up for a.c.If anyone needs to borrow it (for aircare) p.m. me ;)
