Add a few grand to your price to find a good solid car.

They just aren't as common.  Look in Alberta and Sask.  There was a MAJOR dealership in Stettler back in the day and as a result there are more of them out in those areas.

It is just my opinion:

Dry country will have lesser rust issues. There are a lot projects out there but that is not what you are looking for.

You may find a great one north of California or in Canada that has been stored during rainy or winter seasons but be prepared to pay a high price. For some reason a VW that was originally purchased at $2300.00 or less is viewed as an appreciating investment whether it has been driven daily or stored for most of the years owned. There is a market out there and the prices are set accordingly. If I was in a position to look for one I will look for it where it is dry and in an area that has a vast supply of them.

well i wasnt expecting california pricing here, but there are 2 i found in washington for about 5000$us which are the condition im looking for (not perfect or even great paint, but there isnt rust which is all im caring about). didnt realizethe price would jump a couple grand just by the car driving across the border

maybe i should just buy them bring them up and sell them if thats what stuff is going for up here

the general rule is to buy the best car you can afford. so spend your full budget and get the cleanest one you can find. it will be cheaper in the long run.

traveling to get it is worth it. I bought mine in Idaho, and its solid like a rock.

Truth of the matter is that by buying them for 5k down there, getting them transported across the border and to your place.(if it's not a driver) and then getting it all up to snuff to pass Inspection you are spending upwards of another 1-2k right there.

The vehicles from the dryer climates will have must less rust, will not have been exposed to salt, and if the right one comes along well worth the extra effort to bring it up from it's slumber in a barn...

What people forget is that although they were exposed to all 4 seasons cars from AB, and Sask are usually less rusty simply due to the dry climate of the praires.  That and sheer numbers sold.  I'd look around the prairie sites and see if anything is available first.  You'll still need an out of province inspection but won't have the hassle of shipping companies and border.

Ya get what ya pay for BOTTOM LINE. (but there are still finds out there, ya just ain't gonna find them online)

see the name of the only person to post in the thread that isnt the seller?  look familiar lol?

id only think prairie cars would be better off for rust if when they are driven in snow and salt that they are taken care of (ie washed, since lots of people dont bother with that)

btw how would i look more west? do they store mint oval windows in the ocean somewhere.

OOP inspection is pretty much the same as an import inspection ive been told, paper work isnt a big deal, ive done it before and with old cars it isnt a big deal really.

Even cars that weren't "taken care of" are still better than the ones out here.  It's all about humidity and temperature.  Typical winters out there (back in the day) were very cold and extremely dry.  Salt isn't effective at those temperatures and alot of gravel was used.  Beyond the pile up of dirt and grime in the master cylinder area not much else was effected.  Springs are short in the prairies and dry compared to ours.  Weather systems go through alright but don't tend to stick around for months on end.  Add the dry wind and vehicles dry out quickly.  Yes there are rust issues still with prairie cars but it's typically with the ones that have been on the road for 30+ years.  The econo boxes from the '70s took a shit kicking though because of the cheap ass metal used in their production and the lack of anything to prevent rust.  (cheaply painted and no rust proofing on interiors of panels)  Remember that Beetles from the '50's and 60's have something like 20+ pounds of paint and primer applied to them.  They were dipped.

In moderate climates like we have here where the temp is quite often around the freezing mark moisture will do maximum damage.  I'm rambling so I'll stop but you should get the idea by now.

As far as the inspection yes it's the same process.  I've been through it as well.  All depends on the vehicle being imported from out of province/ country.
