The pick up tube, how far off the bottom of the sump should it be or does it madder? Should I run a oil strainer, I am going to run a remote filter?

I run an oil strainer with my 3.5qt sump.  You may find that a  berg sump will have the proper length pickup tube extension and Empi  is shy and too short.

Its a good idea to use an aftermarket big screened strainer so it doesn't impede flow yet catch crap so you dont break you oil pump drive. I've been there done that. Its very common to see the sump nuts loosening off due to vibration.

If your buying an empi sump get a flash light and look inside the sump to see that there isn't left over sand casting. Mine had a big chunk in the corners.

Another good practice is to braze the pickup on instead of relying on a cheap hose clamp.

They are all crappy and big now. The OE VW ones were the super fine mesh ones and those are virtually \"unobtainium\" so just by any crap quality one.

Thats gonna keep sump nuts from getting sucked in the oil pump.

Loctite those nuts in or you'll do what alot of people do..... snap the oil pump drive from sucking in a nut. Even a Gene berg pickup tube magnet wont save your ass.
