i know when you are importing a vehicle it has to have the inspection done within 45 days of entering canada, but i was wondering about project vehicles. if it wont pass the inspection what would you do? is there a way you can extend it that doesn't involve claiming it as salvage when you cross the border? anyone have any insite?

side question--who is the go to guy around here for turbo motors?

I think the 45 days is for new cars only. I've liscenced 2-3 years after import on older stuff, no problem.

ok, solves that problem. me and my dad just assumed the 45 days went for all cars when we brought our cougar up

If your car has no engine you can bring it back as a parts car.

it has an engine, and i thought if i brought it back as parts then that made it have a salvage title and that never looks good on a car, plus its lots of paperwork and inspections to get them back on the road. or so im told

turbo engine im not looking for anything crazy just a mild setup. mid size engine with a quick spooling turbo, give me good power with lots of low end.

its really not that bad to import a car....
just a few pages of paperwork, and dont forget to send all the paperwork to us customs 72 hours beforehand.
that and when you go through canadian customs make sure you have documentation that shows how much you paid for the vehicle, a bill of sale is not enough apparently, they want a bank receipt or a copy of the m.o. or something like that.

yea ive done it before, so gone through all the paperwork once, i was just wondering about the inspection since i had assumed the 45 days was for all cars, not just the newer then 15 years ones

The 45 day rule seems not to apply in the case of older vehicles. The bus I bought from vwboop was brought in last winter, and I didn't get it done/inspected/transferred till August. It was very easy and the icbc girl never mentioned anything about the 45 day rule.

yep, no problem on the older ones, I had mine for 8 months before getting it road worthy to hit inspection. Then no problem at all with all the paperwork from the border and the inspection stuff.

isn't it a lot harder to get it back on the road though as far as registering it? it's cheap enough on an older car to just bring it across correctly if you intend on driving it. and saves you the hassle as well. I paid $15 to get my '64 across.
