just got the oct 06 issue of ultravw with darrell's car on the cover and a nice spread inside.

all i can say is.....WOW. sweet ass car. superb detail, well thought out and meticulously assembled.

i especially like the safety wire on some of the fasteners (valve covers, oil filter mount, carbs, etc). very trick, and very unique. i mean, we all have seen safety wired fastners, but how often and how detailed is that?

a few other of my faves include the 1 year only aussie mph/kmh speedo, the location & detail of the fuel pump & lines, the chromed door latches, the radio bracket, and what looks like a header to muffler clamp instead of a flange.

i can see why this car created such a stir and got so much praise during the classic weekend. i knew it was clean, but dayumm....this car is smoking.

great job darrell, and to all those involved in the build.

I totally agree!
This car is so nice, as I saw it in person at the Classic.
Darrell and his wife are very hospitable, as they gave us a soft drink on that hot day at the Classic.

hotvws got darren d's feature out first so it seems fair that ultravw gets darrells.

but how can you call dibs on a car, anyhow? if hotvws is actually trying to pull that shit, it makes me like dislike them even more.

i mean, i dont know much about the magazine business, but it would seem logical that unless the owner of the vehicle literally \"signs over the rights\" of the photos & story to 1 certain mag, then the car should be fair game for any mag to feature.

i seem to recall reading somewhere that 2 different magazines arent supposed to feature the same car in the same month, but you cant expect 1 mag to have to wait for another mag to feature a car. it's business, and you've got to produce a product that the consumer will buy, and that is sweet features on hot cars.

just my 2 cents.

Along with a 6 page feature, and the cover, HOT VWs asks to have other VW mags 'hold back' until the feature comes out. HOT VWs asks for some loyalty where the european mags can be ruthless. This is why when a car is starting out a shoot, the HOT VWs stickers are put on the 1/4 glass. 40 years in business VS 4. Dean or RK can explain it better, you have to know the whole story. How about the Brad Lang versus Super VW battle..wierd.

To me HotVW is the Holy Grail of VW magazines - if they wanted my car for a shoot and asked that I not shoot for another mag until it was in print I would have no problem with it. Look at how long they have been covering our hobby. They are THE VW magazine.

while i certainly can't speak for HotVWs or Ultra VWs, i can confirm that there's no bigger piss-off for media types to suss out a great feature subject, do the research, assign the photos and write the story, only to be scooped by your competition. at my paper, if my direct competitor does a story before i get the chance to print it, my story won't see the light of day. the nature of competition requires us to do different stories/features -- otherwise, why would one reader choose to read ours versus theirs?

while magazine competition in such a small market may yield some of the practices lanny's talking about, i know many news outlets (be it paper, mag, radio, TV) will also directly ask feature subjects and news sources for exclusivity.

first off, hotvws is a great mag with an amazing history and the way they have supported every aspect of the acvw world (street, strip, sand, off-road, vintage, show coverage and sponsorship, etc) is phenominal. i grew up reading hotvws and vwtrends and have to say that without those mags i would probably not have been as into acvw's as i am today. for that, i am thankfull.

but imho, ultravw has raised the bar and hotvws hasnt really gotten any better, they've just stayed the same.

that seems like alot of \"loyalty\" to ask for imho. it would seem more reasonable to ask the owner of the vehicle for exclusivity. i'm not sure i understand the 1/4 window sticker thing. i know it's on the car for the hotvws shoot, but it probably doesnt stay on there for much longer than that. and if hotvws is this way about feature cars, i wonder how they feel about their writers/photographers working for the other mags.

i know ultravw has only been around for a few years, but volksworld has been around for awhile, hasnt it?

i'm totally picking up what you're putting down and the same can be said for alot of businesses. competition is fierce, and sometimes you have to be extra creative, extremely unique and offer that \"special something\" in order to get the people to pay for your product rather than someone elses.

i'm just analyzing this from the outside looking in. like lanny said, rk & dean could explain it better and i'm sure there is alot more to the whole story. i just like a good, clean discussion and i also enjoy learning more about how it all works.

regardless of all the politics and everything else involved, i will continue to support hotvws, ultravw and volksworld by buying their mags.
