Driving Thru The Snow
« on: November 29, 2005, 09:58:32 AM »
Well another first for me.

I have owned and driven a VW in Puerto Rico; I have also owned and driven a VW in Hawaii. I have driven an original 4 cylinders Jeep up the side of a muddy hill.

Now today I have lived, driving my 64 bug in the snow to UBC was a blast even while watching all the $%@%^%*&$$@# stupidity around the roads of the lower Mainland.

My bug is a champ, and yes he can do the tail whaling when there are no cops or cars around.

Now I will have to clean up all that salt and sand.

Bugs are lots of fun in the snow, the only problem is theres no weight in the front so they suck at turning, especially when you try donuts!! :P

Hell yeah I hear ya on that James.
My Type 3 was choppin' the tops off all the banks in the middle of the road this morning.
This is my first winter in an aircooled with a heater though and other from the obvious foggy windows, she was a champ!

I got to say it was funny today to watch some people driving, i drove my bus to work, no problems at all, then I leave the yard in my full size van and off to white rock, not too bad until around 10 am when I head into to crescent beach and it was snowing heavy for about 10 minutes and got to watch all the well off types with there bmw's and what not trying to get up the little hill out of there, I actually had to stop one lady and tell her to just go home, she lucked out as a city truck came by and dumped some sand and salt for her to get up the hill

Truly hilarous.
Vancouver drivers do not know how to drive. I saw countless highend suvs sliding around and cars on summers. The best was the lesabre I saw spin out on Arbutus street. Definetly the backroads were the way to go today.

Mad props to ford rangers and snowies!

Danger! Danger Kirin!
I feel myself slowly feeding a size nine Doc into my mouth.

Yes it was a jab at us mainlanders. Still giving the DGLVK a hardtime for cancelling a cruise over a little rain(well in my view anyway). I do have my beetle on the road and its insured as PLEASURE use only. Also it needs an alignment and I don't feel comfortable about driving it in the snow/sand/salt and having it rust out from underneath me. Or worst get hit by a yuppie in a x3 that doesn't know how to drive in the snow.  Same with the BMW. They only made so many of these vintage cars so why risk it when you can afford it? The ranger on snowies is the parts hauler/ salt truck It takes me up the coq when need to and hauls greasy shiznit.  Plus if it gets hit by a yuppie I don't really care. I can find a identical one(maybe one with 4wd!) in the buy and sell the next week as soon as I get the payout. And 76 bus. I didn't know your bus was on the road. Last time I saw it, it wasn't. Maybe I didn't pay enough attention as you made a jab at my BMW's old rusty floor pans(Key word being OLD no longer around!) Like buses and old aircoolers never rust either...

Now that wasn't so painful was it?

that wasnt so painful. but now it seems to me that you are saying i am poor and cant afford to have 2 cars. i could be wrong, maybe i am just rowdy tonight. but whether you are or arent saying that. i do have another a 63 being built from the ground up, so i must have money to be able to do that! i just have chosen to drive this one year round!

kirin yourself too easy to pick on, sorry bud!

Hey dude,
Not saying your poor. But I've admitted this and I think you might to. I could drive a new golf VR6 if I sold my bug and my 02.. But then life would be boring without old cars. A lot of people think that just because you drive a old vehicle you must be broke. Not true in many senses old car's cost more money and emotionally (Lets not even talk about the date that got soaked going through the carwash!) Yes I completly bring it on myself and you do have a lot of respect from me for driving your beetle daily.. Ultimately what you do with your cars is your choice. I may not agree with it but theres nothing I can do about it. And its my opinion and everybody has one.

Now driving it in the snow on summers is asking for trouble. But I'll be the first one to admit that everything I do isn't 100% safe or legal...

I've spoken enough!

I remember driving my 72 SuperBeetle (which had no heater) in -40c winter temps in the early 80s. I swear it was warmer outside

Shan who? I don't know quite who your talking about Shane. But its not surprising that you know more about my love life or rather lack there of then I do.

The girl that got a \"hosing\" was in Carcar. And lives out by the Ferries. Her dad was hardcore into 2cv's and other crazy French cars. Needless to say that was the worst date of my life...

Its okay 76 bus. I need the shoes for walking with the way the weather's going. Plus I wouldn't want you to put that size 11 through my floor pans or somebodys rockers.

There was a lady that  couldn't understand why she was in the ditch because she had a 4wheel drive.  Just abit oblivious.

Jeez.

So many people die on the highway close to us  because they are not driving to suit the road conditions.  28 accidents in 24 hours on the last long weekend all within a 10 km stretch of highway.  This was the most ever here. 5 people died.

Kevin,
I drive up a good part of that highway a number of times of the year to get to my families place at Shuswap. Its really quite a shame that we do not have stricter driver's training here like they do in the EU. Specifically such as in Finland where you have to be able to prove that you can control a skid or a slid in order to pass their exam. Also it's due to people being completly unaware. Its really quite sad to have so many traffic fatalities its a fact of life though. Just remember folks when the weathers nasty slow down because getting there late is better then not getting there at all.

this is the first time in six years that i'm not driving a beetle in the winter, actually the first time ever!! i remember driving home one night after a party and my windows were frozen inside and out, i could not get them cleared up, tried warm water but it just froze to the glass as soon as i poored it on, and after trying that i definetly couldnt scrape the windows anymore, but anyways, i drove home for 12  kilometers with my head sticking out the driver side window. Thats the coldest my face has ever been!! not to mention the redest. goooodtimes

Well not a NEW one.
But any nice A3ish vr6. But then I would be like every other DOV'er
If I liquidated it all and all the spare parts I would have 20 grand to spend...

Stop thinking about it.

26+ years ago when I was an Aprrentice out @ BCIT campus in Burnaby coming home the Canada Way hill was closed due to snow. There were no cars around so I thought I'd try it, got part way up front spun around and slid back down. Thought I'd give it another try this time went up backwrds all the way to the top!    Where they won't go front wards they'll usually go backwards!

The only problem with front wheel drive is if you let off the gas.....The back end want to keep going and you may end up doing a few circles if the road is glazzed ice.

The best winter car I ever had was a rusted out hunk-a-junk '79 Datsun 310. That beast would go anywhere and wouldn't get stuck. It burned a quart of oil a week but got 40mpg. What I saved on gas I spent on oil :D
