it sounds like you had the right idea. take off the spring plate & torsion bar from the working side and get a long bar and tap out the broken torsion bar from there.
now to get that spring plate off. obviously, it's under incredible spring tension, so be carefull of the baby maker and any other body part you wish to keep. you could get a hydraulic jack under there and slowly raise the plate off the stop and gently pry it away from the stop and slowly lower the jack. or maybe the guys at airspeed could sell you a spring plate removal/installation tool. one that clips on the plate and bolts to the body mount. i've never used one so i dont know how well they work, tho. or get a BFPB (big f#@kin pry bar) in there and pop it out. thats how i did mine. stand back and pry like hell. but it sounds like you tried that allready, so i'd go with the jack or the tool method.
