Took the semi automatic out of a friends 68 bug and put in a IRS and now the engine will not go all the way in.  It is like it is binding on something hard I am about and inch and a half away from success and it will not go in an further.  Please help.

Did you check to make sure the clutch plate is centered when you bolted down the new pressure plate?

if you replaced the rear engine mounts the studs may be sticking into the bellhousing area too much.just went through this a few weeks ago.had to pull the motor out again and trim the studs almost down to the nuts so the ring gear could clear

I used a clutch alinement tool ,But I will double check it. We had one bolt where you could see it was rubbing so we fixed that. Once the engine is push in as far as it can go it still spins freely. Any ideas will help I don't know when we can get back out there to try again

Got the proper pressure plate and release bearing combo?

I haven't bin out to the car for a week but I heard the nut for a standard fly wheel is different than than the auto stick, because of the pilot shaft. :blush:

Check the trans splines and make sure the're clean clean clean. Try your clutch disc on the splines too. I had exactly the same problem. I was using a tranny that had been sitting outside under a tarp for a few years, and the splines had got a little bit rusty. I wire brushed them, and they looked fine. After much grief I finally managed to force the engine in (bad idea, as we all know). It started but the clutch wouldn't release because it was binding on the splines. Hope all this helps.
