Haha thought I was done with the updates on this one, been focusing on other projects lately, but I have had some new developments on it.
The spare transmission is definitely a good one, no noises at all and shifts very nicely (though I'm having a pesky axle boot leak). I've been driving it for the past few weeks and going to some local town shows, everyone seems to like it. Scored a disk brake kit off of a local vw enthusiast for a great price, waiting on bearings to show up before I put them all together. Still looking for a 65/66 decklid for it, the replacement I got has a few too many issues for me to use it. Haven't heard anything new about how the car ended up where it was though.
I may have found a new project here, a guy in town has a 78 Champagne Edition bus, thinking of picking it up. Floors, frame, jack points, outriggers all totally solid, needs a dogleg patched and rear wheel wells. It will be my welding practice vehicle, then I'll come back to this bug with some experience and fix the heater channels properly.

I still have that decklid for you. Sorry I never got back to you about it. Let me know if you still want it.

And as final closure as to how this bug ended up where it was, heres an interesting story:
A friend of mine phoned me today to say he found a 66 beetle for sale, and wanted me to look at it with him. Went to the guys house and it was very nice, so my friend is going to buy it. The guy said it comes with some spare fenders and hood and such, and he showed them to me. All were painted seasand. Guess where they came from? Yep, he was the guy who had scrapped my 66. Had a long talk with him about it. I didn't entirely get the story on why he scrapped it, he said it wasn't really what he had been looking for, and it had too much rust. So, my friend is buying all the parts and the car, and I'm buying the fenders and hood and whatnot from him. Reunited at last :)

The fenders were pretty scraped up, so I might try repainting them in the future. Hood and decklid were nice though, and I kind of like the look with the black fenders.
