Have been having some trouble with starting the bug lately, sometimes it turns over so slow and just fires, other times fires up straight away. Had the battery checked and thats ok, all the connections are good, there is a good connection to the body for the earth, can I then assume that it may be the starter motor????

Make a difference if you push in the clutch or leave your foot off in neutral? My 62's carbon throwout bearing drags and sometimes won't start with the clutch in.

Thats interesting as I always start it with the clutch in, I will give it a go without, thanks.

is there anything consistent that you can think of that is related to either the slow cranking/starting or normal starting conditions?

outside temperature?

engine temperature?

After a short drive and stop he turns over real slow befopre he starts, last week it didnt start at all and had to get a friend out with a jump start. But generally it starts ok most mornings and afternoons after work, dose that make sense???

Sorry mate but I'd guess your starters on its last legs. It sounds just like what I went through. In my case, the bushing in the housing had actually self destructed and I believe the armature (sp?) was starting to ground out. It would crank over good sometimes and then barely turn over at all.

Since it sounds like all your contacts are good its likely your starter. You can always pull it and have it checked out 1st.

hey man. it sounds VERY similar to the problem i was just having. i redid the timing, but same thing. it would start fine sometimes, but after a short drive it would barely turn over and usually wouldnt start. i tried everything i could think of and everything people told me... but eventually i said the hell with it and put in a new starter- problem solved.

for a little more cash you can throw in an auto-stick starter. they are more powerful (a little bit), but they are self supporting, and don't use the bushing in the tranny (an added bonus if the motor is in the car).
