Anyone know how they make power from these little engines ? I know they use a turbo and likely use racegas. Do they use a stock engine block ? Internals ? Is there an aftermarket ? What about the cylinder heads ?

everybody seems to think you have a porsche motor in there one guy went as far to say that vw guys use twin turbo porsche engines

ok heres the link if you want to go set em straight

Easy your talkin' about my staple diet  ;)

I would look at the age category of the people you label as ricers. Many are truly young and lack the knowledge.  Many young newbies thinks boltons make significant HP. I know a fellow named Eli aka bluelight, he has the fast 12.6 second blue civic. I'd consider him one of the oldschool guys in the honda scene. He's an intelligent tuner not by any means ricer.

the acvw crowd is fortunate that we have great traction and the foundation to put it to the ground. Front wheel drive transaxles have a hell of a time applying the power. Some of the guys in the honda scene are truly making great power but lack the traction department so they are having a real hard time making fast time slips.

When I was at mission I think majority of them were in the high 14's and 15's.  With some smart tuning they can be going faster. Along with tuning they also must invest alot of $$$$

Ah Jeez mowser....

Let's just set the record straight here guys. No they aren't running Porsche engines. Yes they have increased the displacement. Usually in the neighboorhood of 2- 2.2 litre. Several are running SINGLE TURBO's. Some are on NOS. The \"green beetle\" in question is the Hulk. A very well built, very fast, and well driven car. Keep up if you can. Any questions.....

I don't know.......I think this whole \" how do they make those old VW's go so fast \" attitude is more than just young punks who lack knowledge. I'll bet there are many \" intelligent tuners\"  out there that also just can not get there heads around an old aircooled bug having lots of power.  Sure , we see it all the time and take it for granted but lets face it, our old bugs have allways been known around the world to be very slow.  99% of the world does not see what we see.  When you first encountered a truly fast old bug or even the idea of it did you really believe it at first?  I know I didn't .  I'm sure even most of those \"young punks with little knowledge\" can believe you can make lots of power out of a honda motor , but an old aircooled VW ??  .....NO WAY.   I think the whole idea of high powered aircooled VW's just takes most people completely by surprize , much more so than any other type of car. I've seen it in thier faces so many times. It's like they've seen a gost.   But maybe it's not thier fault .  When they go to Mopac or Lordco and probably many other places around town they will see hot rod Honda motor parts on the shelf right there with all the big V8 stuff.  No VW parts though. Never was , never will be .  You have know where to go. You have know about places like Airspeed. It's almost like a secret under ground sub cult we've  got going on around the world.  Maybe thats why I like it so much

Red suits me just fine..... in fact it's what colour Waldo is.....   mostly  :P  If they had their heads on straight and weren't so damn clicky they'd a walked up to you and actually asked what was under the hood.  It seems that the \"Ricers\" just won't associate with anyone else but other ricers.  Their loss as I see it.  ACVWs have been going fast for decades.  There's alot of knowledge base.  They just fail to see that and jump to conclusions.

Do you think that may be because the way they are stereotypically looked down on?

VW owners have always been the \"black sheep\"  in the hot rodding family, hell they're the black sheep to the rest of the German Marques as well. Sport compact tuning is the future of hot rodding. Get used to it.

I for one, find the import tuning an interesting sport. I could do away with the look of a lot of them, but that's a personal taste issue you get with any customizing. Not only that but how many sport compact owners name their cars??

You are getting me all wrong Matt.  I'm just speaking from what I've seen.  You go to show or drags or what have you and the Import guys keep to themselves.  The V-8 guys seems to do the same.  It just seems that the VW crowd gets out there and is interested in all of it.  I have a '91 GTX that is moderately fixed up.  I love what the guys are doing with their imports.  Hell I love seeing them eat V-8's.  There's nothing stereotypical about my comment.  If it weren't true one of them would have talked to Shane by now about his car.  The number of times I've walked up to guys to ask them about cars and what is \"under the hood\".....  It just doesn't seem to happen with \"their crowd\".

If you want to talk stereo types I'd have to say that they just don't seem to care about the rest of the speed community.  They are stuck in their little corner.  Now that is just my 2 cents and take however you like.  Personal experience has taught me one thing.  You can't please everyone all of the time, most of the time it isn't worth trying.  Please yourself and be happy.  Just be real in doing so.

I think it's good they are taking notice and asking questions - might bring some into the fold once they see the potential of the VW. Or at the very least garner some respect.

I'd say look at the age group and you'll see a trend. Back in the day guys would buy scirocco's and rabbits in the early 80's and stick on super sprint exhausts and larger redline throttle bodies and drill holes in the airfilter boxes and think they had a potent HP racecar. These days its honda's and subaru's and other imports.

I bet many \"asian import\" enthusiasts had friends into them and so they joined the \"group\" since many bolt on parts are so readily available at most speed shops.

For the average joe that jumps into the acvw scene these days are considered a rare person. Think of it as a kid in highschool. All of your friends have nissans and honda's and some with domestic econo sport boxes. I'd say theres a higher percentage that the kid would buy the bellybutton fart can exhaust for his honda because its the cool thing to do. Highly unlikely you'd buy a 1950-late 70's volkswagen beetle.

If someone loves a honda or whatever car I'd say power to them.

I dont see alot of \"our acvw group\" walking over to the \"honda corner\" at mission raceway so that isn't a real good arguement. I do however know a small handful of them and some are hardcore and some are just younger lads with boltons just havin fun. I think we've all been there and done that when we were younger.

I do try to talk to the v8 guys. They are usually more mature and more intune with thier cars but I think when we are at the track we are just itching to get called out for the next run.
