I wonder what kind of HP increase you'd see by lightening the rods??

$1500 for Ti rods sounds about right. But I've never heard of Cunningham brand. Look at the picture of the rods in the box, and it looks like one is wrapped in a Chinese newspaper.

You would see a horsepower increase by lightening moving parts, but I have no idea of how much. I don't think anybody has done back to back studies with VW engines. Try checking some of the V8 websites.

You won't see any hp difference with lighter rods. Connecting rods don't absorb hp.
All a light con rod gets you is the ability to rev a lot higher before you collapse the oil film that supports the rod bearing.

Hi Bruce,
Let me clarify. Lighter rods free up horsepower. You are not wasting HP accelerating parts. Same idea as lightening a flywheel. Or taking any other weight out of the car, for that matter. The rods themselves will not generate more hp.

there are many reasons why light weight parts are used in engines.sticking to connecting rods there are some things to look at.engines have basically 2 types of movement.RECIPRICATING and ROTATIONAL movements.any time either of these are lessoned the engine has the ability to accelerate at a faster rate as ENERGY is not being wasted accelerating or decelerating a component [rod/piston assembley] or rotating a object [crank/flywheel].
but it gets better .because you now have a lighter rod you can in theory shrink the size of the rod journal on the crank [lessoned rotation mass] as well as the smaller rod journal will allow even more ENERGY to be freed up in the form of less FRICTION due to the smaller journal size.end result is quicker acceleration and less vibration.now you can see there is more reasons for using a smaller diameter chevy bearing in a vw on the conecting rod
