Downshift Squeal
« on: April 10, 2016, 08:05:32 AM »
I finally did the clutch done in my bug yesterday (after only procrastinating for 6 mos) So on the way from work yesterday and to and from work today I noticed squeal when downshifting 4th-3rd at speed (like shifting down to pass or panic stop for a red light) it will occasionally do it from 3rd-2nd as well, it doesn't do it if i slow down first before downshifting though.

I've done clutches on my previous bug and none of them have done this.

Any ideas what might be causing it?

When you're shifting gears there is a sequence of three independent things going on.
First is pushing the clutch in to decouple the engine from the trans.
Then you move the shift lever in/out of a gear
Finally you let the clutch out.

During which of these three events is this squealing going on?

Here are three independent things you should know.

First: don't ever reply to me like I'm a dumb teenager that needs everything explained/spelled out.

Second: I am pretty sure everyone else who has read my post knows at what point this happens so I'm not going to waste my time explaining it to you.

Third: find out more about the poster before you post a smart ass reply, cause guess what (and this is the real kicker) I am a Red Seal Journeyman Automotive Tech with over 20 yrs of automotive/mechanical experience so I think I know how a transmission/clutch system works.

did you change out the throw-out bearing , I had one go dry ,rusty. i think Bruce was only being helpful to find out at what point the noise is heard.

lol. I thought Bruce's post was perfect and to the point. Clearly laid it out so we're all on the same page, and followed it up with a simple question that would help with the diagnosis.

I've been doing all my own car work for 20 years, reaching the 60 vehicles owned point and only owned manuals (plus ONE automatic truck). I can't figure out where you're getting the squeal either.

you know when i read a reply from someone who is obviously fishing for help ,because they are stumped.which is fine as we have all been there.
and this is obvious due to the fact i have seen the same question posted on at least one other vw forum.and when you respond to someone in that way ,who is obviously attempting to assist and get a starting point to work from.it really upsets me ,and this is the reason people with knowledge dont respond or add positive feedback anymore.

Bruce is a unbelievable source of information knowledge and skill and myself and many others have at one point been assisted by him at one time.

72vdub you need to lighten up ,since you are a 20 year red seal automotive tech this should be very simple for you to figure out since im assuming the noise started after the clutch work.

if you are still struggling,  possibly start with some good detail of engine /clutch component's replaced or machined during the repair as this may lead to better results

Sorry if my reply was a little rude, and I get that Bruce was just trying to help and I appreciate that, what I don't like/agree with is the way he went about it. If he had worded it as a question and not a statement I would have had no issue with it, but when people try and make themselves look smarter than someone else (even if you are) it just gets to me. I deal with people (customers, techs and even friends) like that everyday, and the majority of them have no idea what they are even talking about. So when I post on here and get a reply like that I take offense to it. I guess that's why I usually just try and figure things out on my own and rarely post on forums.

Back to the topic, I'm pretty sure I figure out the problem. I rechecked everything last night and just happened to look at the belt and it seemed to be sitting a little high in the pulley. I checked with NAPA and they actually come up with 3 different belts for my engine, and the one the sent me just happens to be the longest one. so when I first put it on it seemed good, but once i started the engine i guess it stretched out just enough to now be riding on the smooth chrome surface of the aftermarket alt pulley. So I'm going to get a shorter belt and see what happens.

My initial thought was belt squeal.
If more power is better. Then too much is just enough.
Why do it once when you can do it thrice?
