You guys are insane if you think you'll provoke a bidding war.  The add is a hoax so why would he even think of a bidding war when he can take you both for $2900.  Just a thought, I love the idea of workin this ass over but make it worth while and make him sweat, not start to think something is up.  Things like two guys bidding over the car from Canada might tip him off.  Especially when they are both asking similar questions pertaining to details.
that's a very good point. i also think the bidding war will not work but rather he'll try to negotiate 2 seperate deals.

that's why i didnt offer up his email adress, i didnt want to \"scare him off\". i was thinking along the lines of how to catch this guy (through ebay or some other form) so his name and reputation as a scammer is known.

or to just have the guy caught in his lies....or run around thinking he's actually going to get away with it....or set up a \"meeting\" where nothing but his time is wasted.

generally, just try & f@$k with this a-hole.

my last email...

hi lori,

thanks so much for the reply & the pics. i'm happy to hear that it is still
for sale and at a reasonable price too!!

do you have a friend or someone close to the car in georgia that can take a
few detailed pics of the car? i'm most interested in the heater channels and
rear quarter panels.

also, are those tail lights original for that year? and are the one piece
windows original?

i look forward to your response and i really hope we can make this deal
happen.

i dont really understand why we need to relist the car on ebay though (i'm not
very ebay savvy)? if we can come to some sort of agreement on price &
delivery, maybe a with a bank issued certified money order or paypal
transaction would work.

i look forward to hearing from you.

cheers

& his reply...

Hi again Silas,

I'm sorry but there is no one that can take some pics at the moment. Well there is no need to relist the car but we will have to do this through ebay since it's safe for both of us.
Let me explain you how we can make this deal happen.
The process works something like this:
1. You send the requested deposit amount of $2,900.00 to an eBay motors representative.
2. eBay will confirm me that you have made the payment.
3. I will ship the car or I can come back home so you can inspect, test and make a decision if you will keep it or not.
4. If you will not get exactly the same car that you have viewed in the ad, and also a clean title you will receive all your money back from eBay motors.
5. If everything is ok eBay motors will get the approval from you to release me the founds.

If you agree with this process please let me know your full name and address and I will forward the details to eBay motors.

 Regards,
       Lori

i think i'm going to return his email & call his bluff on the car by saying i just met a guy at a local show 2 weeks ago with the exact car that is in the pics.

i dont have the time or energy to deal with this loser anymore...unless someone else wants to pick up where i left off.

Does EBAY even involve themselves with stuff like this?  Holding money until the deals are done?  Perhaps the emails should be fowarded to EBAY and let them go after this person for fraud.

Silas, as a service to the VW community, you should keep this up until you have his real name.  Then SLAG him all over the Samba so the whole world knows it.

If anyone feels like bothering some one a little more local, the squareback in Stefan's yard with the roof cut off is for sale again.  [_[

ebay does have an escrow service... but it still smells like a scam to me.

wow. even when the little buggers get caught they'll still try the exact same scam. that's brutal. i mean, if you're going to be a crook, at least be creative about it.

did ya report this one too bill? i did see a seller's phone number on there... should we all phone the dood and harass him?
Sometimes I get the feeling the whole world is against me, but deep down I know that's not true. Some smaller countries are neutral.
