I just went to check the number on the bettle trans and I have 2 one I dont know the history the other came from a 74 beetle I had used it in my manx for a summer but was to tall for the big tires it is clean and worked well painted silver both are model # 113 301 103 L with a 28 uner this number if interested I think the going rate is 100 for the unknown condition but spins smooth and 200 for the one that works good

What do you mean by "freeway flyer"? Has this trans been rebuilt?

A freeway flyer is I think from 1970 and newer stock beetle transaxel. When they increased the speed on the interstates vw had to increase the speed  that the beetle could go so they uped the gearing not as good for hills but great for the hwy this trans with a good 1600 will go 80-100 kph without a problem and your rpm range will be right for susstained speeds for proper cooling and oiling the older trans with lower gears on the freeway will be slower or you will be over reving. over the years vw kept increasing hp, gearing and th rule with vw parts is the newer the year the stronger the parts and it will fit any irs beetle
it is a good upgrade

You need to use the period key more often.

In 67 when the 1500cc engine came out, VW changed the gearing to better use the increase in hp.  From then on, the final drive ratio in 4th gear never changed.
There's nothing "freeway flier" about a stock gearbox.

Bruce,I looked it up on the samba and the term freeway flyer seems to be a name given to this transaxel for 71 and newer with one removable side plate. I do not know were the name comes from but here is a link to a topic that goes through all the vw transaxels it is a good read. I do not clame to be an expert on this stuff.http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=143138 and the subject is transmisions for dummies

here is another site with trans codes http://www.midsouthvw.com/TechTips/tech_tip_TransaxleCode.htm the trens is stamped AT so I think the ratio is 3.875

I think you're referring to the single sideplate trans with 3.88rp, which came out, IIRC, in 73. It is also not a "freeway flyer" as it has a lower 4th than the older trans, so the final drive ratio in 4th is about the same as the earlier trans. There are however custom trans available from trans builders known as "freeway fliers", but they are not stock.
