Heavy wheel
« on: April 12, 2009, 12:39:54 PM »
Hello Everyone,

I own a 1972 super beetle, I have been noticing lately that the wheel has become very heavy while turning right and when I turn it to the left there is an odd dead spot and then it goes heavy like the other side, Does anyone have any ideas where I should start looking?

Thanks Tristan

Do you have a stock front end?

Have you done a visual inspection of your ball joint or checked your tires and alignment?

I think that is a start.

Did a visual and everything looks fine, it almost feels like a steering box problem... but thats gonna be a pain to fix  :'(

Does your steering wheel have a lot of play?

I am sure there are a whole bunch of them available in the lower valley.

First, jack the car up so the tires are off the ground.  Then turn it lock to lock.
Disconnect the steering damper to see if that's the cause.

Ok, so i finally got my ass around to checking the bug and it turns out to be the drag link and the steering box that are worn out... what is the quality of the rebuilt steering boxes from CIP like?
It's expensive, but i figure i'll change them before i start driving the car alot.
