Putting A T-1 Into A T-3?
« on: October 19, 2003, 03:41:00 PM »
Aloha,

I'm just entertaining some ideas as to what I should do with this engine I have sitting in my closet, and I was thinking about getting a T-3 of some sort.  What exactly would I need to do to a T-1 engine in order to run it in a T-3, with the pancake tin.  I would like to be able to use the rear storage compartment if I had a T-3.

One more thing...I would have to run something like 48 IDFs or 45 Dells to get this motor to breathe properly...would those fit in a T-3 engine compartment?

mahalo,
Joel

There are a couple of things that are different but it also depends on year of T3.

The 1st is the dip stick, is your closet engine built on a universal case that has the dip stick block off plate on it? This is where the T3 oil tube bolts on. Is your T3 a swing axle with frame horns or an IRS that requires the rear engine mount case provisions (also on a uni case) for the rear cross bar mount?

No, IDFs and IDAs don't fit under the deck unless you run like 13 mm tall aircleaners and make the manifolds short enough, nothing \"off the shelf\" for your purposed carbs. Best bet is DCNFs with Berg manifolds, they will fit.

Aloha Tom,

Yes, I'm using a new AS41 case, so I suppose it can be done.  Sounds kind of stupid when I say that I have an engine in my closet, doesn't it?  But hey...when you're out of college and living in an apartment...you don't have many choices!   :D

Anyway, I don't even have a T-3 yet.  I'm just interested in what I would need to do in order to pull this off.  I would like to have an earlier model, but a '69 with IRS wouldn't be bad either.  I like the early style front end.

So the Berg DCNF's will fit, eh?  Thanks for the heads-up.

mahalo,
Joel

Hey Tom,

Just out of curiosity...how well does your Notch handle?  I followed the link to your webpage and took a look at the Notch.  Nice car.

I like my VW's and I like road courses.  I'm thinking of sometime in the future it would be fun to vintage race a VW or even club race one in SCCA.  Does the T-3 suspension lend itself to that sort of usage better than the T-1?  I remember seeing some photos of a Notch in Europe on the Samba that was being used as a rally car, I think.

aloha,
Joel
